Iraqi law requires an appeal and the sentence executed within a relatively short period of time; 30 days, I think. So its no surprise that they carried out the sentence just after he lost the right to an appeal.

Because he escaped a death sentence previously, I was concerned that he would somehow get away from custody again. I'm more comfortable with LWOP for common criminals, and I'm always uncomfortable with the death penalty, but if there ever was a poster child for the death penalty, Saddam is probably it.

I believe the government (ours? theirs? who knows.) will bury him in secret and later he will be exhumed and the family will receive the remains for reburial. How long? No idea.

And when did he ever escape custody (other than when he was on the run prior to capture)?

I agree with your first statement, your third is wrong IMO. Executions can be done in a manner that does not offend the dignity of the executioner.

Back in the 1960s, I think. It was before the Baathist Party came to power, and IIRC, he was tried in absentia and then later captured, but escaped. When the Baathists came to power in a coup, he was a chief of staff or cabinet member (something like that ... can't remember the details). He ascended to power later, after the death of the leader of the Baathists, and he consolidated power. This is all done by the Iraqi government. We handed him over to them in a legal manner when they requested him. From that point on, he was handled according to their laws and customs.

The new government in Iraq has adopted laws that are in concert with Islam, so the body will not be desecrated or buried in an unmarked grave. It will be returned to the family so that they can arrange burial. Perhaps someone more familiar with Islamic law can chime in here, but there are some pretty strict standards for these things. There are prohibitions in Islam against desecration of bodies.
