SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Some of that, sure. Of course it isn't human psychology that's changed today. Those weaknesses in it have always been there. Yes, the "this day and age" media landscape plays to them. (Historically, outside of the journalistic era I happened to grow up in, it's been that way more often than not, if with lower tech.)

We get better at stuff through two methods:

• Hardware upgrades, passed on by nookie
• Software upgrades, passed on by culture/education

Hardware takes care of itself; everybody likes nookie.

Reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic, (hand washing, mask wearing), reference checking, source seeking ... all software upgrades we spend effort and years to install.

We've had software patches for some of the bigger holes in human psychology since at least release 400-BCE-04 Socratic Starfish (a long-term support release), but we revert to factory settings if we forget to install them.

Complicating factor is education/culture get sneered at as "elitist" during a populist moment, and we're kind of in one.

The fact that wanting and seeking agreement I think is a long term tenant of human psychology, is actually just part my point.

I remain in the large scale camp, much larger than today's numbers, with only social isolation and contact tracking showing recognizable results.

There are too many people in some regions who refuse to reasonably isolate. We are isolating but are appalled by the amount of traffic on the roads and the crazy crowds at the store when we pick up our online order of supplies.

 

look more closely at nursing homes and long term care facilities. seperate the data from the general population, and make reopening decisions based on that data.

in the US at least, these facilities make up a large percentage of cases and deaths.

same for inner city hotspots. get people back to work in more rural areas and increase support to keep inner city people under shelter.

 

The problem is that reopening one state or an area can risk the resurgence of outbreak in other states or areas. In desperately divided states of America, that is going to have a big repercussion.

Wasn't that what RI governor tried to do with NY travelers? But failed attempt... IIRC

i tell ya, the data is weak at this point. we won't know enough until after the fact studies. and then we'll be arguing about who did what when, because there's no data on that.

i don't think you can compare homogeneous countries like sweden, or non democratic countries to the US and other democracies.

Whether or not Sweden's approach 'worked', or not, will be determined only in hindsight, when all the countries being compared have reported something resembling 'final' death tolls. They are intentionally taking a bigger hit now in the belief it can be less later, so the determination must wait until after 'later' has happened. And comparisons will probably get wrapped up in the politics of different health care systems too, pushing the subject over to FHoPol.

 

and swede's do social distancing well. they've always been a bit standoffish

 

I never noticed that too much when I worked for Swedish based Ericsson. They were very friendly & helpful, many times.
