That would be nice. So let's hope no one's going to scream "it's the Chinese virus!" or "it's the Bolivian virus!" (or wherever TF the first cases end up being) just to get their political Jabs in, so we can focus on things like ... responding to the virus.

Assuming the next one's a virus....

I guess I'd be interested, anyway, in what answers the senators received, if any, to the five numbered questions in their letter about it.

Ah, those are meant to be early warning systems for possible pandemics. That is what was dismantled preceding the pandemic. They might have given more forewarning to put the plan into place.

There was a plan to put into place for when there was an outbreak. It has been around for decades, and the it was one of the best. Funding cuts to it had taken place in the years previous, but the previous administration had chosen to ignore it. So in the end, it didn't matter if it had been funded.

"When the Journal Sentinel asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide evidence that officials used the pandemic playbook, a spokesperson offered none. Instead, she said the Trump administration's response "was informed" by three more recent plans.

One of those plans, "The National Biodefense Strategy" from 2018 is not a step-by-step guide for responding to a pandemic, but more a list of goals. Trump departed from one of those goals when he chose to downplay the virus rather than provide "accurate, timely and actionable public messaging."

The other two reports — the Biological Incident Annex (2017) and the Pandemic Crisis Action Plan (2018) — were both found to be flawed during a pandemic preparedness exercise called Crimson Contagion. The simulation took place in August 2019."
America had the world's best pandemic response plan. Why did it fail?

It was the missing medical equipment stockpile that put our medical staff at risks.

As for plans, they are subject to change based on most recent facts and data.

So that readers without fhopol access are not left out, the second linked "Coronavirus" was from Hidyho, posted 2/28/2020, copying an entire Snopes article, just after Tochatihu linked but didn't copy any of it. Here is just the first bit, follow his link to see the rest:

... the researchers decided not to seek FDA approval, which can take years, to market the spray as a medical product. Instead they are selling it as a personal-care product. "Because of the nature of the ingredients ... we do not need clinical trials (and we don't make any medical claims - as this is regulated as a personal care product/cosmetic)," they say.

Reads as if written by a stock tout.

Are benzalkonium chloride and phenethyl alcohol non-irritating to snort 3✕/day?

Former is an anionic surfactant. 'Soap', if you will, from modern chemistry. Nasal friendliness would depend on how much.

Latter chemical's safety data sheet (SDS) is unappetizing.

Personal care products seem like The Wild West for govt regulation.

    Viral pathogen surveillance exists:

    International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN)

    More reading:

Toward a global virus genomic surveillance network - ScienceDirect

PREDICT may have been better, but it ran afoul of ... what? I don't think that epitaph is well written yet.

    ==

Anyway, I see surveillance as 100% positive. If blended with 'gain of function' (GoF) research, clouds gather. GoF is expedient to tinker with nasty genomes, in secure-enough labs, to grow nasty and understand how nasty it could become. And yet a GoF goof release could be a nightmare exceeding any expectations. Seems important to disentangle these things.

I went to Wuhan but time did not allow me to visit

    Insta-construct hospitals
    The famous wet market
Or any other wet market where weird things were previously sold (but probably are not now).

So, no trip report. My visits to University and Botanical Garden are not topical here.
