    Ah.....
    FUD.
    Fear, uncertainty, and doubt is a manipulative propaganda tactic used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics, polling, and cults. FUD is generally a strategy to influence perception by disseminating negative and dubious or false information, and is a manifestation of the appeal to fear.

    Drug manufacturer & subsidiaries of Pfizer ... who wouldn't want to be immune to liability for bad behavior. Bad behavior can result in a loss of billions with a 'B'.

    Valdecoxib - Wikipedia
    if facing a loss of billions - knowing there is liability, how much more reckless might Corporate America be if they arranged with Congress to face NO such consequences. Not saying they WOULD take advantage of that, but there's a bit of cringe factor.

    The avian flu that was of concern before COVID has jumped to dairy herds in the US. Pasteurization has been shown to inactivate the virus in milk, so we shouldn't see a milk shortage in addition to eggs.

    We can segue to the gun industry here. Or how the auto industry wanted legal coverage because the ethanol one wanted to up the base level of alcohol in the fuel supply.

    no doubt ... those too, are serious 'what-about' type concerns. i know no one would suggest we give up or ignore one issue, just because there are other issues.
    ;)
    Yet history teaches us that we never learn from history. We still put too much trust in the industry - decade after decade.

    Not only does the drug industry know what side of the bread that the butter is on, Congress Critters too .... vis-à-vis fda - they get lobbied hardcore to let drugs through with soso scrutiny - not to mention poor policing of legislators' pharmaceutical investing ahead of the public?

    If we start posting about 'gun control,' the thread might relocate to 'Fred's House of Politics' (and pillow fights.)

    Some think drug companies are evil, and they are no different than any other company.
    If one of their products has worked well for you, you appreciate it.
    If one has damaged you, you’re upset or angry.
    The fda has a place in the process, and I don’t see any suggestions for a better system

    Merely pointing out the pharma industry isn't the only one to get legal protections.
    Plenty of others have also sold products they knew weren't safe.

    OH???
    'safe'.....for the consumer?

    Please tell the ladies and gentlemen of the jury Mr Baldwin, exactly how many firearms out there have killed or injured the consumer when used as directed?
    How many firearms consumers have been killed by unforeseen design issues?
    Please tell us, HOW many firearms were bought by the government and forcibly issued to citizens whose genuine and closely held beliefs proscribed their use?

    Perhaps I've missed the news story about GM being held liable for drunk drivers?
    How many VAW attacks has Ford been held accountable for??
    Was Ryder ever made to pay for the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing?

    Guns? That's quite a leap. Let's give it a try.
    The key is "used as directed". Right there in the manual it says... Never point at another person. Always act as if the gun is loaded.

    In Baldwin's case there was a hired expert that was to ensure that a loaded gun was never allowed on set, but she ignored the rules that she was supposed to enforce. That was not "as directed".

    How many people have injured or killed by cars when used as directed? Don't fudge... Elon Musk is "directing" his customers when he goes online and over hypes the abilities of his cars.

    what's "quite a leap" - imo is interpreting musk's hype to tell users to not pay attention to what's going on around the driver’s circumstances.

    Never specified an industry in the quoted post.

    Tetraethyllead was on my mind when I wrote it.

    How many people have died from various lung diseases due to people properly operating their cars as directed, and filling them up with a correctly refined chemical that produces smog when exhausting it to the air we breathe...as directed in the manuals?

    Actually, the more severe risk is from diesel exhaust. that black soot is bad stuff.

    thread drift:
    Don't let her be the sole fallgirl. At least four people are culpable here:

    * the armorer, who was away doing something else at a critical moment;
    * the person who actually handed the actor the gun and called out 'cold gun' by habit, not from actually checking;
    * the actor, who skipped the mandatory safety lecture, then spent the make-up session focused more on their mobile phone than the lecture, later asserting the safety wasn't their job;
    * the cheapskate producer(s), that underpaid the armorer position, making it a part-time job multitasked with a separate job, and also cheaped out from using remote-controlled cameras that would keep operators out of potential line of fire.

    What? Two of those distinct positions were actually held by the same person?

    The lowest paid person above has already been convicted. It would be a travesty if she is the only one ever held responsible. But it would be standard operating procedure, pushing punishments down to the lowest rung of the ladder, while the top rungs get off free.

    /thread drift.

    There is zero soot coming out of diesel exhaust when it's properly tuned, on low sulfer oil, & exhausts passing through its catalytic converter

    But I see many trucks on the highway spewing the soot. Not all trucks are well maintained.
