That J&J news about abandoning the RSV vaccine market, is from March. Old news. J&J's "issues with RSV vaccination" were that they were losing the vaccine race, well behind GSK, Pfizer, and Moderna.

No results of their vaccine trials up to that point were released, so we don't know if their vaccine was less effective or more troublesome than those of the competition, or if they were simply too far behind in this race and no longer had enough prospect of earning enough profit to cover the remaining work needed.

Either way, one should not use this old news of their dropping out of this race, to cast aspersions on the other RSV vaccines that did complete the approval race.

you'd think vaccines (and most/all medications) didn't have possible side effects

My interest in #6586 was in the information-literacy angle. But a return to more of a COVID focus would not disappoint me.

Masks on the street and in shops is roughly 50/50 with general public and close to 100% with the staff. Healthcare facilities, they will supply you with a mask on entry, no mask, no entry, go find an "anti mask" health professional .... but then, you wouldn't need one anyway, being sick is just a state of mind or caused by the micro trackers or what ever they put in vaccines ... and if you refuse to wear a mask then you certainly wouldn't believe covid existed so you wouldn't have a vaccine eh

The only way the general public knows there are spikes from a new variants, is the ambulance "ramping" at hospital emergency wards. Up to a 3 hrs wait to get from the ambulance to inside the doors where the ambulance paramedic can hand over care to the hospital and go back out on the road to pick up the next patient seems all too common on news reports when a covid surge is on .... No manic tv reports any more, a war somewhere seems to be the news of the day at the moment

As there may be interest, I offer insights about how things are going over here. Beijing area hospitals are at or beyond capacity to deal with respiratory infections. Those probably include COVID du jour, RSV, and seasonal influenza. I have not seen details. I have not seen detailson whether other areas including Kunming have been hit hard.

People here carry face masks and use them in some situations. Previous COVID testing and vaccination campaigns and closures happened before, but have not returned. Not here.

A person I know here got seasonal influenza vaccination but fell to that 3 days later for 9 days. I was not surprised, because flu vax are 'approximate'. I was surprised because I did not know before that a person could actually get flu vax here. Those are made the old way in chicken eggs. I might dare to go to hospital across the street to buy mine. But I hate to go into hospitals! Fomites and airborne floaties are everywhere.

The world is now quite open to international travel, without bio-testing, so ... figure it out. We seem all to have agreed that freedom for us, and freedom for our virus pets reigns supreme. All good, except where medical support staff need to handle these matters, and can do less of the rest of their work.

Looked locally: COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Hospital Capacity in Madison County, Alabama: Data indicates the hospital's bed occupancy, but do not represent local hospitals surge plans to accommodate more patients. | rgj.com
    • Crestwood: 60.4% (228.9 beds); 91.9% (16 ICU)
    • Huntsville: 91.2% (912.3 beds); 87.7% (108 ICU)
    Holy Carp! I'm masking up!

Truth in advertising, vaccinations reduce the probability of catching and later, the intensity of an infection. Better to let others use the hospital beds and ICU.

I was irritated shopping three days ago at the COSTCO bulk store when another customer had a coughing fit in the middle of a main isle. So I took a left and got away from the spreader. Seven days to go.

If it's any consolation - scientists report that generally the most recent strains, although there's an uptick in cases, it's less deadly.
COVID-19 cases increase again; new vaccine is about a month away.

My next door neighbor was laid up with Covid a couple weeks, and a nurse friend, she got it. I have seen one person wearing a mask total. A volunteer in a thrift shop. I tell her she’s smart. I reach for my mask in my jacket but don’t put it on. No one else has one on. I feel the pressure. And I’m 100% certain now I got Covid in 2022 at the same thrift shop when there were all these people talking away in there and I went right in there with them. Hadn’t been in any other place.

We Always mask in public places indoors.
With multiple health issues, it’s not worth the risk.
Sure, I sometimes feel a bit awkward when no one else is masked, but I’m not a self conscious teenager anymore

You did say you feel a bit awkward. There is some youth in there somewhere.
I was confronted by a guy once during Covid who said why are you wearing a mask. Anti maskies don’t mind sharing their ideas. Hence the group awkwardness.

Most health care advisories say that surgical masks are only marginally effective for virus prevention. N95 masks and surgical masks doubled up with a cloth mask can help prevent infection, but the advisories do not promote hem at this time even for us experienced individuals. I've stopped wearing masks except in health facilities where they are requested.

There are people that will be wearing dishwashing gloves & two m95 masks driving in their car solo.
    More power to 'em
Some of them get covid anyway. How does one prove what the odds are of decreasing catching it - anyway. What kind of experimentation would that require. Not talking about the little drawings with particles shown to only go so far and such, but actual people that catch it around others 1.5 M away. I suppose you could find a bunch of volunteers like 'Moi' .... who doesn't get symptoms

you can't test every possible situation, or the many (improper) ways that people wear them. for myself, i make sure my n95 is tight, and understand that it doesn't provide 100% protection.
still, if you're inside a space with other people, there is some protection, and not just against covid.

a lady in the supermarket really let mrs b have it one day. she was almost deranged. it can aggravate certain personalities for some reason, and to the point of violence in some cases
