For example, in the areas where ebola struck, more people died from disruptions to the medical care systems than from ebola.

I'm going with not freaking out. I've gotten sick before, it's a drag. I'd rather not be sick and freaking out at the same time.

"An American biotech company says it created a coronavirus vaccine three hours after getting access to the virus' genetic sequence on Jan. 9, and now scientists are racing to get the vaccine on the market in record time."

Missing in Action? Vaporware? Stock Market manipulation? I've heard no updates to this claim, and statements elsewhere that any vaccines are 12-18 months away.

Containment is quarantine and contract tracing. US and many other countries are doing it. So far, besides China, only S Korea and Italy seem to have gotten behind the curve.

The CDC is already acknowledging that the US has a threat, not IF but WHEN.

In my industry, we just had an entire convention cancelled (was schedule for next week in Austin, Texas) due to Corona Virus. Several professionals that I know, have lost work due to this cancellation. Can only hope this doesn't become a trend for the Hospitality Industry.

In the current convention that I am working, 4 clients have cancelled for the same reason.

Today's update (as always, numbers closing out 4pm yesterday): +6, all among Diamond Princess repatriations. That makes 42 cases from the Diamond Princess.

    A selection of today's Coronews:

China for first time has less new cases than rest of world (WHO sitrep 37). This would have to happen but today's the day. Also same source welcomes new contestants Austria, Croatia, Switzerland and Algeria. Yes, with Algeria, Africa is now on board.

That company doesn't seem to be saying anything more. But a different company just delivered a batch of experimental vaccine to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). They are hoping for first phase human trials to start in April. But even if everything works well through all the necessary phases and steps, mass deployment is still a year or more away.

Any idea how many folks remain on Diamond Princess cruise ship? With 705 cases it must win at fractional metrics.

Apparently those evacuated to the USA were screened by health works without protective gear and training. My understanding is 14 tested positive. The evacuees were retained while the screening staff returned home including some staff who flew home.

Source: Whistleblower accuses HHS of dramatic coronavirus mistake

. . . The New York Times was one of several news outlets to report overnight on a whistleblower report from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Federal health employees interacted with Americans quarantined for possible exposure to the coronavirus without proper medical training or protective gear, then scattered into the general population, according to a government whistle-blower who lawmakers say faced retaliation for reporting concerns.
    . . .
A group of Americans contracted the virus abroad, and Trump administration officials, rejecting the advice of the CDC, recently decided to bring those people back to the United States. More specifically, they were brought to two Air Force bases in California.

Staff members from the Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families ... were not provided safety-protocol training until five days into their assignment, said the whistle-blower, who is described as a senior leader at the health agency. Without proper training or equipment, some of the exposed staff members moved freely around and off the bases, with at least one person staying in a nearby hotel and leaving California on a commercial flight. Many were unaware of the need to test their temperatures three times a day.

The whistleblower specifically wrote, "I soon began to field panicked calls from my leadership team and deployed staff members expressing concerns with the lack of H.H.S. communication and coordination, staff being sent into quarantined areas without personal protective equipment, training or experience in managing public health emergencies, safety protocols and the potential danger to both themselves and members of the public they come into contact with."

Here is my concern, being in the US. Cases are likely under-reported because there is no widespread testing.

The federal agency shunned the World Health Organization test guidelines used by other countries and set out to create a more complicated test of its own that could identify a range of similar viruses. But when it was sent to labs across the country in the first week of February, it didn’t work as expected. The CDC test correctly identified COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. But in all but a handful of state labs, it falsely flagged the presence of the other viruses in harmless samples.

As a result, until Wednesday the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration only allowed those state labs to use the test — a decision with potentially significant consequences. The lack of a reliable test prevented local officials from taking a crucial first step in coping with a possible outbreak — “surveillance testing” of hundreds of people in possible hotspots. Epidemiologists in other countries have used this sort of testing to track the spread of the disease before large numbers of people turn up at hospitals.

i'm more concerned about people who are carrying and spreading, but have no symptoms.

'california monitoring 8,400 people who have traveled from china'

'boston monitoring 33 people who came through the 11 airports accepting flights from china.'

'massachusetts has had 680 people in quarantine so far. 377 have completed their course, and 231 are still under self quarantine in their homes'

    Dude, i'm right here!

Not especially kidding. With my wife and I both flying all over place for work I don't think there's any chance my household will escape this, just hoping it's a bad cold and done.
