When I frequented Italian cafes during my military service, I noticed that the European mindset of shared space really could promote the spread of an Airborne virus. Cafes are crowded and you have perfect strangers elbow-to-elbow next to each other. Customers drop trash on the floor in the cafe doesn't sweep the floors for hours.

Iranian lawmaker claims 50 deaths in Iran as opposed to 12 according to the health minister.
The lawmaker was later removed from the assembly with a fever

Is the last sentence meant to be in jest? If not, that would indicate grave circumstance.

Not according to the article. If it isn’t true, it might just have been an excuse to get him out of there

Today's U.S. update (which is really from reporting by 4pm yesterday) is still 14 novel coronavirus cases detected here (12 from travel, 2 person-to-person), but a jump to 39 among those repatriated from the Diamond Princess (36) and Wuhan (3).

Separately, the CDC's latest weekly U.S. Influenza report (data to Feb 15) estimates for this season are 29-41 million flu illnesses, 13-19 million medical visits, 280-500 thousand hospitalizations, and 16-41 thousand deaths.

    Also:

As best I know, personal defenses against this coronavirus are the same as for regular flu.

One big pie chart that is all inclusive is interesting but not that informative.
I doubt the info is available, but a much better visualization would be a weekly version of the pie chart showing how it changes over time.

Another variant would be to be able to track the same people over time to see how they move from one category to another. More new infected cases tend to dilute the overall death rate (until, if and when we reach steady state). It is important to see what the death rate is at something like 3, 4, or 5 weeks after detection and see how this is changing (if it is) over time for the newer cases and/or the cases where treatment is taking place, if any.

I download data from govt ncov website each day. Now trying to be consistent at 930 am local time.

WHO situation reports are less detailed about China, but recently more attention is being paid to other countries. Current # is 35.

repeating earlier link to site doing Gompertz models.

    Corona virus

About halfway down page see China only +90 days. It is probably the most reasonable extrapolation that can be done with data available.

Ugh, this was not in fhopol

Why do you want to talk about influenza?
It’s a known quantity, and there is another thread dedicated to it

Dick pound, longest standing member of the IOC, said they would probably make a decision on whether to cancel or not as late as two months before opening ceremonies

Oops, my bad, forget which forum this was in. Will move it.
It is a big epidemic, deadlier than numerous other things that cause greater public concern. An example of the common great divergence between perceived and actual risks.

agreed, but apparently you're not reading the reports from who, cdc and others. the flu doesn't affect much unless you die from it. coronavirus is disrupting the whole world.

the san francisco mayor just declared a local emergency, and they don't even have any confirmed cases yet.

More people are going to be impacted by the freak-out than the disease.

Indeed...considering how many folks actually die each year from alcohol/drug abuse and/or just driving their personal vehicles.

but those don't cause product shortages, cruise cancellations, major flight disruptions, food shortages, potential medicine shortages, layoffs, hiring freezes, stock market crashes, yada, yada, yada...

They are considered acceptable losses? How many die from the flu each year? Market and other disruptions will pass just as soon as complacency sets in there too.
