Blocks transmission in a ferret animal model after viral shedding has started, so an oral pill after a positive covid test. Phase II/III trials in progress in humans. Let's hope this holds up!

There is also some (weaker) evidence in support of the AstraZenica/Oxford vaccine having an impact on reducing transmission.

I understand this may have come from their study design which could have included some swab testing results on their volunteers.

    Of course it does.
This is like saying I have a bucket with water in it and it leaks.
Emptying the water out of the bucket will stop the leak.

I don’t follow your analogy, but you are factually correct

    I don't know why I bother sometimes....................
IF something KILLS or otherwise disables ALL of the virus present, then it also automatically stops the transmission.......since there is nothing left to transmit.

Saying that a vaccine doesn't "stop the transmission" is like saying that a bandaid won't fix a broken bone.
It is an incomplete and misleading statement.

Yes, if the results of a ferret animal model hold for human trial, then MK-4482/EIDD-2801 would be effective in stopping the transmission of the virus after a patient receives the positive test as well. My concern was that those who have had the test showing positive results and being admitted to a hospital would be effectively quarantined anyway. What would be a really good use of the drug is to have it taken by the asymptomatic infected people prior to the testing to really prevent transmission at the earliest stage. The problem is that asymptomatic infected people without testing would not know that they are infected, so the drug has to be taken prophylactically by a large population. But that may not be achievable if the drug only works for a short period of time.

Concentrating on or worrying mainly about "transmission" when talking about pharmaceutical development is wasted time and effort.

We already KNOW what to do to minimize transmission.......well some of us know that, brain dead politicians are an exception.
    Masks.....distance......sanitize.
Alas, it seems that a fair percentage of the population in general is also brain dead enough to believe the politicians and not the health care professionals.

Specifically: The Governor of Florida is a brain dead moron.
Too bad his term doesn't expire in January too.
His inability to understand the obvious is putting ME and my friends and family in jeopardy.
    I am pissed.

The common human cold is zoonotic with ferrets. With coronavirus being one of the causes of the cold, they are probably a good model for this. Unrelated, ferrets are used for reproductive toxicology studies of new products.

Just using this hospitals and other care environments is important as it would protect the care givers.

Targeted prescriptions to those that came in contact two degrees out from a positive case would be more effective than just handing it out like candy to all. For that to work though, you need good contact tracing, and affordable prescription coverage for all.

I wouldn't call it wasted time and effort. As you pointed out, social distancing and mask-wearing did not work in large part to change the behavior of most western country populations. If there are oral medications that can be administered to prevent initial infection and subsequent transmission of the virus, it would be much easier to control the spread I would think.

Agreed. The protection of health care workers would be at most importance. I am now reading up on the ferret model literature. The mink factory farm episode is fresh in my memory but using them for medical research was something I did not know.

    Sadly it probably wouldn't.

Because the same STUPID crowd who refuse to wear masks would probably claim that the medication was some kind of Communist conspiracy and really is designed to kill us. They are already making noises like that about the vaccines. :(

It is too bad that I have no good way to protect myself from the results of the stupid behavior of others.
Every time it rains I have the urge to start building an arc.

i've been self isolating for 8 months, it works pretty well.

plus, unless you live in the inner city, your pretty safe with a mask when in public indoor spaces. the numbers are still very low.

I'm keeping to a policy that even masked indoors is significantly more hazardous than well spaced outdoors. So don't go indoors anywhere unless there is significant value to doing so, and don't stay in there any longer than necessary.

In-store browsing while shopping? Almost completely gone. Find the things on my list as quickly as practical -- the big hardware stores facilitate this by providing aisle and bay numbers on their websites -- and get out. No treasure hunts.

Despite the headlines of the various "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" orders, the smaller print in this state's guidelines still encouraged many forms of outdoor exercise. We always made very heavy use of that, and continue to do so.

Well, anti-vaxxers are a very well-organized movement, especially in the online communities. :(
"Under the present conditions, it predicts that total anti-vaccination support reaches dominance in around 10 years."

the good news is that if you get vaccinated, you have little to worry about with anti vaxxers.

the bad news is that health care works are obligated to tolerate their nonsense

I saw a Space movie once (more than once)...they had fire and explosions in space and you could hear the explosions.
    And your point is?

Here is the really bad news:

Suppose I assemble (socially distanced) two random groups of one million people each from the US.
One group gets the vaccine and the other group passes through the line and someone just taps them on the arm.

Within a month, statistically, about 165 from each group will die from heart disease.
For the ones that got tapped, the families will say that they were already unhealthy and never give the tap a second thought.
I mean how can tapping someone cause them to die?
In the group that got the vaccine, at least half...maybe even 150 of them will have the families claiming the vaccine killed them.

Now multiply those numbers by 100 or 200. Now add a few months.

Just another example of "you can't fix stupid".
And it manifests itself in various different ways.
The ultimate way might be: If you really ARE stupid, you don't KNOW that you are.
