A recent study published in the journal Science, showed rhesus macaques, one of close primate relatives, recovered from mild SARS-CoV-2 infection are protected from reinfection—at least for short period tested.

Primary exposure to SARS-CoV-2 protects against reinfection in rhesus macaques | Science

Whether this means humans recovered from COVID-19 are immune to the reinfection or not is certain. Also the limited scope of the study does not provide answer the question to what extent a first infection might afford protection over the course of months and even years. But at least it gives hope that COVID-19 patients who develop acquired immunity may be at low risk for reinfection, at least in the short term.

I mostly agree but as long as antibody transfusions are effective treatment, we know there is some resistance to the local strain. How long or at what concentrations remains an open and interesting question.

What do you mean by "antibody transfusion"? If you mean plasma transfusion from the recovered patients, then that is not likely to be viable solution, as it seems clear that most of recovered patients do not have high titres of neutralizing antibodies to mount an ideal immune response. SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (COVID-19) | Page 113 | PriusChat

To be effective and viable treatment, it has to be manufactured neutralizing antibodies by means of monoclonal antibody production.

story on apple news yesterday about a guy who got it , recovered, and got it again within a few months, with symptoms both times.

documented by his physician, but i think (hope) it is unusual.

what does seem to be obvious is that everyone has different experience, and one standard isn't likely to fit all when it comes to immunization or treatment.

no science or research, just a couple of medical opinions offered up around a large article repeating old news

It isn't the only case of someone apparently getting it again.
"The question as to whether a person could be infected more than once gained traction back in March, where a local government in Japan said it had recorded the first case of a person who has tested positive after apparently recovering from an earlier bout.

According to NHK, the woman, in her 40s, is a tour bus guide who travelled with tourists from Wuhan, China, in January. She tested positive for COVID-19 on January 29 and was given the all-clear by February 6.

Just weeks later, the woman began exhibiting symptoms and was tested again - only for it to return as another positive result."
Coronavirus: Can you catch COVID-19 twice? | Euronews

It might not be a case of catching again, but not fully getting over the first infection. Basically having symptoms go into remission.

Other research is pointing to reinfection being possible.
In a survey of recovering patients in China, 30% had little to non-detectable levels of antibodies against the virus. Mostly among younger patients. Their initial immune response likely defeated the infection before antibodies were needed.
Can you catch Covid-19 twice? - BBC Future
Other studies are showing that antibody titers don't stay up long, and reinfection may be possible with antibodies still present. The patients had less severe cases of the disease, but they still shed the virus; being a potential way to infect others.
Coronavirus immunity: Can you catch it twice? - BBC News

So, people can recover without making a notable amount of antibodies. Reinfection for such can be possible soon after recovering, but, hopefully, their immune system will still be up to the task of fighting off the virus. Then those that do produce antibodies, may not have the protection of them for long; levels could return to base line in as little as 3 months. Generally, getting a virus infection, like the flu, means not having too worry about catching it until next year. it is looking like catching COVID19 twice within a year is possible.

Also mask are a common sense way to possibly reduce transmission of the virus and it is within everyone's means to wear a mask. They can made of old t-shirts, bandannas etc and many businesses give them away. Why in the world wouldn't any caring individual wear one?

I find that I am learning a lot about people I thought I knew. I am hearing all sorts of stupid idiotic reasons for not wanting to wear a mask. In no particular order:

"I know how to take care of my own health and do not need to be told what to do" (face palm! wearing a mask is not so much to protect your health, you dolt, it's to protect those around you in case you are an unwitting asymptomatic spreader)

"I am a free spirit and no government will tell me what to do" (face palm! You already are doing so many things that government is mandating, like having a driver's licence to drive, presenting proof of age to buy liquor or cannabis, filing tax returns, driving on the correct side of the road, etc. etc. etc.)

"There is no pandemic. Powers that be are undertaking a world-domination maneuver and I'm not going to be part of it." (face palm! If powers that be wanted to control you, they would and possibly already do (see point above). What about all those dead people? Faking it?

Both my face and my palm are raw from constant face palming since March! Help!

    I my humble opinion-

people who don't wear a mask are showing a lack of character and regard for their fellow citizens. (unless there is a good medical reason).

Wearing the mask has nothing to do with our own health it is about loving your neighbor and doing what is best for them.

I now will get off my soapbox before someone kicks it out from under me!

    case in point:

nbc news, 'michigan man asked by customer in convenience store to put on a mask. employee tells man to leave if he won't wear a mask. man stabs the 77 year old customer who asked him to wear a mask.

deputy pulls man over after he flees the scene. man gets out of the car and attacks the deputy with the knife.
    deputy shoots him dead.'

    all over a mask

    Heres the full scoop: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2022483

Promising results on the first Moderna human trial - two weeks to a strong antibody response, low level side effects (particularly at lower doses, which makes the material go further).

So, just proves not wearing a mask can be fatal? Or, asking someone who is already a borderline psycho-killer to wear a mask could be harmful to your health?
So, from that can we conclude that those who refuse to wear a mask are borderline psycho, so the chances of them being part of the psycho-killer collective are higher so they should all be shot as a precaution?
Would that then be recorded as a Covid 19 related death?

This started out as a silly sideline joke, but it sort of got to be a real worrying thing the further I went ...... Think I'll wear a mask just to be on the safe side :)

I disagree, most docs encourage to wear masks, scientific proof may come with the delay, for now common sense is a good enough reason to wear them.

I'd mention few additional things that play into this issue:

(*) Just about all tests will have some non-zero rate of false positives and false negatives. These will occasionally lead to confusion and misleading indications about what really happened in a few cases.

(*) The rates of ordinary influenzas from the four mild coronaviruses (**) that afflict humans, pretty clear mean that the immunities built up from having them, typically don't last long. As I pointed out in another thread, it appears that Americans will typically have each one very roughly ten times per lifetime. So it isn't a stretch to consider the possibility that Covid-19 immunity may similarly not last long.

(**) NB: there are hundreds of coronavirus that afflict mammals. 7 are known to afflict humans: 4 mild coronaviruses that cause about 20% of influenza illnesses, and 3 much harsher coronavirusus that cause SARS, MERS, and Sars-2/Covid-19.

I have to agree with this after hearing a doctor last evening.

He said if anyone's health is so compromised that their pulmonary or coronary system can not support wearing a mask they immediately need to shelter in place and not leave home for any reason right now.
