    Nice photos!
Is there a photo of the intake manifold and EGR pipe?
Are they clean or do they have traces of carbon soot on them?

Compare the turning of both old and new water pump? I think that’s the go-to check.

regarding form-in-place gasket choices, I should note: I’ve NEVER done anything remotely close to a head gasket replacement. Or even timing chain cover reseal. I’ve cleaned the full EGR system a couple of times now, and fervently pray that’ll let me whistle past the head gasket graveyard. (with the odo on our 2010 at 103k kms, adding 3k yearly, I think we’re ok…)

That said, Gasket Master’s form-in-place gasket pick seems sensible for DIY. Toyota spec’d FIP gasket comes with instruction to apply and install the cover within 3 minutes, and have all the bolts installed and torqued by the 15 minute mark. All 20 plus of them, varying bolt sizes and torque values.

Had a question about which face of gasket was shown, figured it out (it’s the face against the head).

175K. City. I got it around 120K and took care of it, but didn't know about the EGR flaws in this car.

Yup. It's amazing how a simple black coating failing can destroy a whole engine.

Good luck with your 3rd gen's head gasket. That's definitely a low mileage car. Makes sense about toyota's pick, they want something fast for when the engines are being assembled in the factory rather than when a mechanic or home mechanic is turning with a wrench by hand.

I haven't taken pictures, but I cleaned them and replaced the EGR valve 2 months ago. There was some additional soot building since them, so I cleaned it out. It's a dirty as **** EGR system in that car. Also, if you look at the intake passages on the head, you can see there's carbon and oil buildup there.

Clogged EGR likely the ultimate culprit.

That was the car’s first EGR cleaning presumably?

The first since I learned about it, I’ve had it since 120k miles. I don’t know if the previous owner cleaned it. When I did it, it wasn’t too obstructed but I don’t know how much carbon it takes to fowl things up. The biggest problem I had was the old EGR valve had the groove cut into it leading to a check engine light. Hence why I replaced it.

Frustrating, the plastic built into crucial components. Also there the water pump impeller, oil filter housing, also problematic.

Yeah. The first time I did my oil (lived at an apartment for 5 years so I took it to a shop) I bought a replacement oil filter housing just in case.

I did the conversion to spin-on. Appreciate the stock system is ecologically superior, but it’s problematic.

Original oil filter housing after more than 60 oil changes; same with water pumps. Use right tool and change coolants. Not Toyota's fault in this case.

If we need to complain think about the brake booster, inverter and rings. But Toyota extended their warranty on each, just not forever.

When I started buying cars we were happy to get 50,000 miles on an engine, routinely changed master cylinders and never heard the term inverter until college and power electronics 301.

I forget, what's the recommended mileage interval for the EGR cleaning?

A key point to buying Toyota parts is to use their online Toyota dealers. Most dealers have one, prices vary so you shop but 25% off and free shipping is the bar. Sometimes a local dealer has an online shop and you may have an option for local pickup (ship to store).

I have had some luck just asking for a discount at the parts window. Discount to repair shops can be 50%- dealer cost is less than that. Dealers are independently owned by billionaires so your guy may or may not participate.

There are annual nationwide sales as well usually around holidays.

These are two I use most often.

    McGeorge/Ourisman
Genuine Toyota Online Parts| OEM Toyota Parts| Toyota Parts Store | Toyota Parts|Toyota Online Parts| Toyota Parts Online

Hoover Toyota (sometimes sells on ebay as well)
Genuine Toyota Parts and Accessories: Official Online Store Hoover Toyota

Finally Hybridpit sells these as a package minus the bolts for $205 shipped. You can do better if you shop.

Yes, in my signature (on a phone, turn it landscape to see signatures).
Definitely, approx. $70 USD was my all-in, shipped cost. See attached Amayama receipt:
