When I was in Service, to keep our winter runways available for quick reaction takeoffs, we used either urea, or Konsin. We had to record the quantities used and inform the Water Authority afterwards so they could prepare for the eventual runoffs.

I've used lawn fertilizer at home when out of salt. It has issues also when used in large amounts.

We haven't seen our roads for a while but when they dry out they will be white. It seems like they use more salt every year.

I wonder how the aluminum bodied cars will hold up with the salt. The Ford F-150 comes to mind.

Our ½ decade in Montana we saw our share of the shiny iced roads ...., but between the gravel thrown down by the county, awd & these winter bad boys -

we only slipped off the road 1 time ... & by keeping the momentum up we manage to navigate back onto the road w/out missing a beat

Studs are mighty tough on roads, so lots of jurisdictions outlaw them. Rightfully so - because poor folks can only afford 1 set of tires so they just leave 'em on year 'round. Sure makes for a nasty noise when they drive by - come spring summer & fall.

Without road salt here, most people would have missed out on work since Christmas for a large amount of time. They surely don't use a lot anymore, as the daily accident reports attest to. Going without snow tires here means you like even more pain. Without salt, you couldn't even walk on my driveway, much less get up the hill to leave. There's a reason Subarus, Rav 4's and the like sell so well.
