I know they say that, but it isn't quite that bad in reality. If I buy a PiP for $26k I am pretty confident I could get more than $17500 for it a year later, much more in fact.
If you're in the market for the PiP and you can afford to wait, I would not purchase until end of August at least. The incentives on the 2012's were enough to make some early adopters cry. Whether you believe the rebates will come back or not doesn't matter. The risk of losing 2-3 months time is well worth the reward of many thousands of dollars. I'm really glad I took back my $99 deposit on the first PiP's that arrived in March 2012. I couldn't justify the cost. When September rolled around with $4k rebates and 0 down with 0% financing it made the decision a lot easier. On a side note: Technically, with all the federal and state rebates that paid me up front, I didn't pay a penny to drive my Prius the first 6 months. Not even gas. My May 2013 payment was the first time I actually paid money to own this car. (6 x $550 monthly payment + $700 gas and electricity = $4000 federal tax and state rebates.
So you are saying it's possible the PiP's around New York could go to $22-24k? I can't say I personally agree with you. As I've already said, Toyota didn't quite understand that supply/demand situation last year. This year is much different.
Sure the discounts, tax rebates, and low cost financing help relieve the burden of depreciation. Cars in a sense are the worst investment. You buy it and every year it's value decreases. However the PIP is a fine automobile and now is a great time to buy one for all the reasons every one said.
Oh, I thought you were speculating if the rebates would return. If it's a sure thing then, definitely, roll the dice. I think increased PHEV competition will drive prices low if not lower this year. Just because Toyota produces fewer PiP's won't mean prices won't drop. See Mitsubishi iMiev with its $10k rebate. Then again, I am not in the auto industry so I will default to other more informed opinions.
I was just told by a dealer in NJ that he sees the current incentives continuing past this month. Granted they don't necessarily know exactly either. But it was pretty cool that he wasn't trying to use scare tactics when I told him I couldn't come get it this month.
I bought a $200 plane ticket and drove my (non pip) 710 miles. The dealership picked me up at the airport Turn off signatures in Tapatalk Tapatalk
