Replacing a Gen I Hybrid battery

    You have options depending on your repair skills.

    1. Buy a remanufactured battery for about $1750 (see Remanufactured Hybrid Vehicle Battery Packs) and install it yourself. Your Prius should be good for another 150k miles.
    2. Fix your existing battery.
      1. Typically only on module (of 28) has gone bad (although one or two others may show some weakness).
      2. Buy a small number of replacement modules from a reliable source that have been rebalanced and tested for capacity (I have 6 left that are for sale on eBay For $30 each plus shipping).
      3. Slowly discharge all of your modules and the replacement ones to the same voltage and put your Prius back together.
      4. Drive it happily for about 100k more miles and then repeat the process when the battery ECU complains again.
