Doing a head gasket currently. Should all the pistons be even before reinstalling the head or Should piston 1 and 4 be up well 2 and 3 be down?

If all the marks on the timing chain match up with corresponding marks on cam and crank shafts, then everything is where it should be?

Right. To get to that point, you'll want to follow the steps in the manual carefully, get the crank to the right position without having pistons cross TDC in cylinders where the valves are down.

To avoid collisions. Go dead slow when rotating anything.
