Red triangle, VSC, Check engine - Can I drive it 10 miles?

The beeping sound is normal when you back up, it was probably disabled when you bought the car and somehow it get enabled again after the install of the new battery. If it bothers you, I'm sure you can request the dealer to disable it again.

Toyota HQ would have everything documented on your car, you can call and give them the VIN number to see what they actually covered.

As for the repair cost. Toyota would only cover the battery cost if anything, never the labor if it's out of warranty (from the examples I've read). Many times the labor cost would be $300-$500 for a dealer to install the battery, even if the battery was covered 100%. I would think the paperwork has to be worded that way. If they weren't honest about it, they risk a lot more than the additional $500 or so they seem to be making if they lied to you.

 

You can call the dealer and have them explain the charges to you, see what response you get.

It's my turn! 2006 Prius, purchased new in April 2006, 98,977 miles. Toyota of Kirkland read the codes, says "replace hybrid battery".

Got very confused about whether Washington is a CARB state, but read a bunch here that answered that question (bummer).

Will call Toyota HQ and "see what they can do for me".

 

Bummer! If it's drivable, you may want to consider having it deep cycled;if it's a good candidate, it's a less expensive route. Also read about trickle chargers...might be a good addition to maintenance.

 

Well, the car is sitting at the dealer now, so that's what I'll try first.

 

Wait, really? For the Hybrid battery? I have a trickle charger for my other car's main battery; it didn't occur to me that it would charge the HV battery. Or are we talking about a different trickle charger?

 

As you found out Washington State is worthless-CARB: Starts 2009 model year, but doesn't get the longer 10yr/150,000mile HV Battery warranty. You only get the Federal warranty of 8yr/100,000miles.

If you have been getting your Prius regularly serviced at the dealership, very good chance Toy Customer Care will do something for you.

DIFFERENT: HV battery is 201.6Volts vs 12V accessory battery is 12-13Volts.

FYI, main battery is the HV Battery. 12V battery is the accessory battery.

 

Hey guys - love the forum. Owner of 3 Prius' '06 '11 and '12. Pretty sure the 2006 needs an HV battery. Question comes back the OP. My son has the car 200 miles away. Is it safe for him to drive back home for me to do the swap or will driving it with bad hybrid battery hurt the car in any way?

 

It would only hurt the car if the bad module explodes. Not common but it has happened. Probably would want to keep the speeds down as well, that way you don’t have the engine running at high RPMs the entire trip.
