Reconditioning Experience with Hybrid Automotive's Prolong System

They also sell battery modules for when they are too far gone to be reconditioned.

 

Read the user guide information on Hybrid Automotive web site. It talks about bringing down to 1v or less during reconditioning process.

 

The Navy brings their NiMH batteries down to ZERO volts to store them. I'd try a charge and discharge before pulling it apart.

If I saw a failed module I would replace it prior to bothering to charge/discharge the pack.
Leaving a failed module in place when charging/discharging can cause some weird behavior during the process.

 

My car's been on charge for about 36 hours. I now need to move it unexpectedly, how do I quickly discharge to a safe level?

Well my 12v got too low so it's not going anywhere now anyway. But it would be good info. to know. I searched and couldn't find any recommendations but I know I've read it somewhere.

I've safely made the vehicle 'ready' and immediately shifted into neutral (as you don't want the engine to start and blow up the battery), then turned on the AC until it discharged a bar on the screen.

If you fail to shift into neutral in a timely fashion or accidentally touch the gas pedal, something bad may happen.

 

No. what I remember reading was a method using the ac.

Nevermind though, I put it on the discharger for about 10 mins then turned car, into N, ac on. All seems well. Except for a dead cell, but that's another story.

 

I can confirm that this works. I have also used exactly this method when I was in a hurry.

 

When reconditioning, what I've done in the past is protected the 12v by hooking it up at the contact points under the hood to a Battery Tender. Easy 12v insurance and not that expensive.

…so, roughly about 24 hours, stopped charging last night. Blue sky with sunshine today, about 4" snow on ground (…I swapped back to the summer wheels a couple of weeks ago (…buggeration!) Stay safe, everyone! That's it until late June!

 

Sigh. I miss snow. It's 83F here right now. But I admit that by this time of year, I was getting itchy to start on the garden.

Your probably going to need a new battery. Money better spend on new one. I had the exact same charger and discharger.

 

That post was two years ago. I wonder. I don't recall if he wound up replacing it yet or not.

Was your reconditioning process not as effective, and have you already disposed of the deluxe kit?

At what mileage did you start reconditioning, and when did your HV assembly finally fail to deliver the performance you were expecting?

I'd be willing to bet the OP still has the same battery, and most likely will have it for some time to come

 

Pretty much stating the obvious. There two type of hybrid owners, the ones who are going to replace the battery and the ones who have replaced the battery.

As to whether the money is better invested in the charger or saving towards a new pack, it is horses for courses.

I bought my package some 5 years ago because I felt the pack was getting soft and was heading for failure. That car responded very well to the reconditioning and has been running great. On average I'm doing a recondition every two years. So for me, I don't regret the purchase and am very happy to prolong the life of the battery so I get more use out of the pack.
