He lives in West Virginia where a lot people depend on coal and Diesel for fuel and power. I think the majority of Americans think this way on EVs and hybrids. I lived there for 3 years because the area is so spread out, going anywhere is 40-46 mins to 2 hours. Going to work 5 days a week in my Scion XB, I was filling up 3 or more a week. I had no idea what Hybrids were and it’s sad that the Technology has been out for 20 years and people still think you have to plug in a regular Prius. Coworkers and family all ask me how or where do I plug in mine? Then look at me weird when I explain how the hybrid system works and how reliable the hybrid batteries and the Prius in general..I don’t know how it can be done, but the public should be educated about these things but people seem to rather take rumors as fact and believe other people’s ignorance than looking up the info themselves. I wish I owned a Prius while living there. I could only imagine how money I could of saved between gas and oil changes.

    Even in more hybrid friendly places, misinformation exists. I know someone who thought you still had to drive 50,000km/year to make hybrids worth it. Despite the fact that Toyota hybrids are much more affordable now (smaller upcharge) or in the case of the Lincoln MKZ, it’s the same price as the regular MKZ. Also, fuel is very expensive. It’s as high as $4.85/gal. Higher than 2008 before the collapse but in USD, still lower (we were at parity before if one recalls so the higher price is multiplied by the current exchange rate of US$0.75 to CAD$1. At parity, it was as high as $5/gal)

    Ask the Koch brothers, they have been very successful in “educating” the public for years.

    Per plugshare, it appears the "ALLSUP" chain is planning expansion in Southeast New Mexico. Plugshare shows CCS-1 chargers planned at the dozen or so Allsup convince stores ... once they are built and operating. This makes sense if they are planning to use EV trucks for product delivery. Regardless, there are sometimes gaps between promised and delivered.

    AT a time when Cumo’s excesses still fit under a rug. Either one….

    Just a comment or two concerning plugshare from my experiences with the comments section, ymmv !
    I got the 14 pip mainly to learn the ins - and outs - of the EV thing. A big part of that is charging out in the wild. The summer of 14 was a lot different on plugshare than it is now, obviously, for anyone that has used it for a few years.

    The outs - The thing is that there are lots of different items ie: access cards, payment schemes, network affiliations, where the plugs are actually located at the facility, etc. , and that stuff is not always spelled out to well in the plugs description. In the comments section for any plug listed on the site where users verify the plugs specs and availability, sometimes with pictures , can be real helpful. But other times and this is and has been ever since I started using plugshare, way off and at times grossly misleading.

    The Ins - Plugshare is IMO a tremendous resource.

    The outs- But it's not always so nice, especially when finding a plug for the car that looks perfect, but when actually trying to plugin the car and use the EVSE, something makes it impossible to use without jumping through the plug owners special conditions not listed on the plugshare site.

    Nothing compares to knowing before hand, or more precisely, having already used the EVSE to charge the car, than to count on what the plugshare site says about any one supposedly available plug.

    The allsup tie up is not going to get many more BEVs on the road, and is not economical, but will allow locals and tourists to travel easier in this current L3 desert. Allsup will sell a few more burritos. This looks like the least expensive way for VW to get them installed and is paying as part of their diesel gate deal. Previously BEVs would need to charge at destination chargers, or plug into 240 V outlets at campgrounds. 2 plugs per location with both CCS and Chademo available. The few Teslas that want to use them can use the CCS1 adapter (it is being sold in South Korea now, I don't think Tesla is selling it in the US yet but third parties are selling them).

    Still its incredible how capable the charging networks are in the US, Europe, and China. The US network will be much better in 5 years with the infrastructure bills funding.

    This thread is over 2½ years old, & millions of EV's have been bought new since then .... despite the virus and the economic disaster going on right now. EV adoption, as a matter of fact is going on at a much faster rate than hybrids were ever adopted - which had the advantage of Sky High gas prices back then.

    And replacing an ICE with an EV now would be so cheap compared to when the OP posted.

    $3 gas makes the purchase of a $60k car a tough justification.

    I couldn't "afford" a $60,000 car "to save money" even if you transposed the "2" and the "8."
    Math doesn't work that way.

    I would do what most middle-incomers do when periods of inflated prices hit, which is cut out extra traveling.
    Since I live 3 miles from work - it's pretty easy. ;)

    I love the mental picture of putting tomorrow's technology into yesterday's facilities. :ROFLMAO:

    OTOH
    The two closest Tesla charging stations to me right now are in outlet malls.
    They did it smart.
    Instead of putting them up front with the Handicap, Stork, Purple Heart, etc parking they put them waaaay in the far end of the parking lot.
    They did a really REALLY good job of hiding the solar panels too - because I didn't see them ANYWHERE.

    Not only will they not likely be blocked by another driver, the 5 minute walk to the mall and 5 minute walk back will give the driver some good exercise and eat up some of the recharging time. :D
