Hey Guys. There's an equal number of chats on this Forum. BACK UP CAMERA FOR 2012 PRIUS two TOUCH SCREEN- NON NAV We already figured out how to modify a cheap $20, 12volt camera from eBay. The camera works on 6.5 volts and has a direct 3 wire connection to the HU. Read more: http://priuschat.com/threads/back-up-camera-for-2012-prius-two-touch-screen-non-nav.111717/page-10#ixzz2MhrsfmIg
Finally got this done today. Originally only used the 6v from the head unit to power the camera but the resolution was terrible. Tapped into the yellow wire as described in this thread and bam, worked like a charm. The rear camera in operation was a night and only the reveres light was lightning the pathway. Last picture shows where I tapped into the yellow wire.
No I did not use any diodes since the yellow wire is a constant live wire anyways. Now that I think about it, I should probably have one from the 6v wire that's coming from the head unit so that the 12v (yellow wire) isn't back feeding 12v to the HU.
The more I think about it, the more I think that is what is causing the issues for most people. I don't recall reading anyone putting a diode from the 6v from the HU. So the 12v is back-feeding back to the HU. For people that used the reverse light, that's every time you back up and will eventually burn something out and fail? Just a guess here. Either way, I'm putting a diode fro the 6v today.
Thanks Rainking, one silly question: If you are not tapping into the reverse light, then how does the HU know when to switch to the camera when reversing? And, another question: The yellow wire is on the back hatch right?
My guess would be that it is already built into the head unit. Correct, back hatch. As you can see from my last picture, I just tapped into it near the white plug. It's the only yellow wire back there, can't miss it.
I might muster enough courage to try this one day... Is there a conclusive agreement on which backup camera to use? Any recommendation? How hard is it "fish" the wire from the front to the back of the car/ I have no idea how to pull down the headliner... so what's the next best thing? I've had bad experiences with trying to get off the A-pillar on the driver's side - could never figure out how to "twist/rotate" the clips... Also - Wondering if it'd be helpful if a new how-to guide was created based on all the discussion about 12V vs 6V stuff...? Thanks all!
We spent four hours using this all-in-one kit- it was not too hard: Factory Connect Camera System for 2013 Toyota Prius C with 6.1" Screen : Amazon.com : Automotive No tapping into anything, no concerns about 6 vs 12 v.- directions aren't bad, and Mik's guide for removing various things are great. We did not go through the headliner- we used his directions to go through the driver's side lower door sills through trunk are and up into back hatch. We were most cautious when running line under steering wheel to avoid the knee airbag. Hope this helps!
How do you wire this Cam?? because in the back is a base to plug the wiring, and how do you place it on the Prius C? can you take close pics?
Is there any reason that most of the backup cameras I see installed replacing the licence light are on the left side? Any issues to install on the right side?????
I don't know if it's relevant, but in Australia where reversing cameras are a standard factory item on all Prius c models, they are on the left side of the vehicle. Now you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen a reversing camera on any vehicle on the right side.
We don't all sit on the left. The view is such a wide angle, the left or right positioning will make very very little difference.
Hello Native2PS, Does your reverse backup camera have the Build-In Parking Lines shown when you are reversing?
I received that one yesterday and hooked it up to the head unit. It was incredibly easy. I'll route the wires back to the hatch tonight. I used Mik's guide to remove the head unit, and I'll use his guide to route the wires as well.
