Thanks Mik and Native. I started the installation process today and after 4+ hours I was unable to connect everything I was having issues with putting the crimped wires inside the HU. While trying to push the crimps inside with a paper clip, 3 of my wires broke off, and when I finally fixed them and tried to test out the camera, nothing happened. I must not be pushing in the crimps far enough into the HU, although when I applied a lot of force, it didnt seem to want to go any deeper :\ Any tips??
I had the same problem, so what I did was just bypass the connector, and connected the crimped wires directly onto the pins making sure that no wires were touching, and I did the same with the purple wire that was already in the connector, after that, everything worked fine. I'm thinking that in the near future I might order another connector, and have the connections professionally done just to make sure, but in the meantime, everything works just fine.
jj, the only tip I can give to you is you have to make sure that the clip holding the pins inside is completely disengage. Try to keep the paper clip in the corner of the pin and then push it inside all the way down, so you can see the metal part of it from the other side of the connector. With the job like that (small / plastic parts) the force doesn't make any good. If it doesn't slide inside, step back and try to see what's the problem. Also make sure that you put pin with proper side up/down.
I haven't had chance to see it, cause I guess I never talked on the phone while reversing but I will check and see.
Hey guys I finally got everything to work! Thank you all for your help and contributions to the thread I ended up using Native's method of connecting the crimps to the HU just as a temporary solution because I kept messing up so much that I now need to order more crimps from pololu lol :\ I just have one additional question Since the camera doesn't fit inside the slot for the license plate light, did you guys put any special padding or something behind the camera in order to prevent water from leaking inside the car?
Update: I've checked mine and it does the same. Even more, if my HU is in reverse and I hit any button on it, the screen will go to that particular menu (Apps, Set Up, Audio or whatever). So it seems that reverse screen is not dominant and it can be canceled by pushing of any button.
yeah, I noticed that too, on my wife's Altima, the reverse screen is dominant to any other function, oh well, at least we have this feature where 95% of Prius C's dont!
Installed my cam today. Getting the pins in was by far the most time consuming part. If you pop the clamp totally out of the connector, put the two pins in that are the furthest from the clamp (video in and + power)then put the clamp back in and push it in halfway then insert the other two pins and snap the clamp the rest of the way in makes it much easier. Getting the pins past where the clamp goes is the most difficult part. Hope this helps anyone else that is planning on installing a cam. SGH-T989 ? 2
Ok sorry, one last question... how did you drill such a big hole in that trim piece? I'm trying to do this without messing up the car Thanks!
I bought this spade bit set from Harbor Freight tools, if you order the same camera that I got, the 1 1/8 hole is perfect, just drill slow, and hold the piece tight, worked out perfect for me 4 Piece Large Diameter Spade Bit Set
Just got my backup camera and the other stuff I need for the install (btw I got the RJ connector kit with the crimp pins from a local hobby town). One thing I'm missing, and sorry if I missed this discussed here somewhere, but how are people mounting the camera? It doesn't clip into place properly or anything. Best I can figure is to use double sided tape?
Never mind, I ran through the thread and found the description of taking off the plastic piece covering the license plate lights. Count me in as another successful install, I did have to reposition the camera once because it was pointed too low.
I want to thank everyone here, especially mik1, managerman, and native2ps for their help and input on this! I've finally got my camera installed and everything is working great! The toughest part was getting the crimped pins into the connector behind the radio. Otherwise everything else, including running the cables between the front and back and hiding them neatly were all quite easy!
Welcome to the forums The revised instructions from Mik1 are in post #110 located on page 6 of the thread. And managerman also posted his version of the instructions in post #135 located on page 7. Hope that helps
My install temporarily worked then stopped all together my HU is not giving a 5-7voutput from it at all. That pin reads 0
I'm experiencing the same thing, actually. The camera was working for about 3 or 4 weeks, then stopped. I haven't diagnosed it yet, not sure if it might be a loose cable or what, but the camera is not getting the 6V power during startup for sure.
