I do a lot of things wrong and I'm smiling about it the whole time because they are so much fun to do.

 

This is actually normal behaviour with anything that has fuel injection. Say if you put a free-flowing exhaust on a motorcycle - that would mean that the fuel to air mixture has changed and over time that motorcycle will add fuel until the mixture is satisfactory, takes some time.

 

You get 1 gallon (3.8 liters) for $1.39, I get 1 liter (0.26 gallons) for the same cost now that the fuel is "cheap" due to fixed taxes which are like $1.10 at the moment per liter.

 

I just picked up my gen 4 prius 2 on saturday and seem to only be averaging 47 mpg around here in the city. Is there a break in period? Could also be me having to re-learn my acceleration habits. I'm in the Boston/Newton area and it can be a bit hilly. Either way, I can't complain as it's basically double my fuel economy in the 07 camry I had.

 

I had a feeling that was at least part of it. I was getting scores in the 50's my first day owning it, now I'm up to 77-80 or so. Other than that, the ride is so nice and enjoyable and I couldn't be happier

I'm just a (7 month) rookie. So I know nothing. And maybe sometimes being dumb, is good?

I just "drive" my Prius. Do nothing special. I gas it up, get in it, turn on that wonderful AC... and just drive.
I've gotten 60 mpg right out of the gate. From day-1. Just driving it like a regular car. Letting the hybrid system do it's thing. Not playing any "Eco" games.

Now I use the PWR mode 100% of the time. My overall, full-tank, life-time average mpg has increased to 64.7. I'm smiling all the way past the gas station.

Don't over-think it... Just enjoy the drive.

 

I always average close to 60 MPGs in my 2nd gen Prius as I consistently maintain 57-58 MPG calculated by hand each time I fill up.

I gotta admit that I'm a little jealous of all the reports of MPG averages in the 60's. My long, highway-only commute, with high speeds and lots of AC use relegates me to the low 50's.

But that's nearly double what I was getting in my previous car, so I'll take it!

 

I think the 50's are great. Nothing wrong with that. You have that long commute, and putting that car through it's paces. You're making it work! That's a good testimony for the Gen4 Prius.

(Just ignore us guys who are tooling around town at 35 mph. )

 

I just ran my first full tank of gas thru my brand-new Two Eco

Stats: it said 66 miles to empty, but only got 9.16 gallons when the pump shut off, so I assume it is very conservative with the DTE number
586.3 miles, 67.7 mpg according to the on-board calculation

I hand calculated 64.0 mpg, but I noticed my odometer appears to be off -2%, so adjusting for that would be 65.28 mpg.

Any way you slice it, I was pretty impressed. This is 75% highway driving in mostly flat areas. Average speed over the course of the tank was 41 mph, EV usage was 27%.

I have averaged about 63 MPG on the way to work in the morning, and around 70 on the way home in the afternoon. Assume that the biggest difference is temperature as I take exactly the same route and have not used the climate control at all

Now I only have to keep my wife out of the driver's seat if I want to keep the mileage high!

Yes, it would be helpful if people would also post what speed they are driving. I do 90 highway driving at about 71 mph. I have a gradual elevation change of about 1000 ft over 35 miles or so. If hypermilers would post speeds, then I would be able to compare my driving to similar conditions to see how well/badly I'm doing.

I've had my gen 4 touring since October 4. So far I've logged about 1800 miles and I'm now averaging 52 mpg. First tank was used to get the car to my dealer from out of state. Second tank was about 53 with Toyota recommended tire pressure. Second tank was 56 with pressures at 40/38. Third tank, 54. Fourth tank 52 Mpg. Of course, the temperature has gone down from the 60s into the 35-45 degree range. Will only get worse through winter.

Previously, I had a gen 2 2004 that I got 54 mpg summer and 48 mpg winter. at 244k miles, i traded up for a 2009 gen 2 where I averaged 45 mpg summer and winter (same basic commute). Driver laziness or just luck of the draw between the two virtually identical cars?

My goal is to get 60+ lifetime mpg. Not a good start, lol.

 

You're absolutely correct, more information from the hyper-mile guys would certainly be helpful.

Nice post. I think your mpg is very good. And you are absolutely correct, it would be nice if the hyper-mile guys would give more detailed information about their driving.

Are they doing a daily work commute? Or are they retired? Are they driving in hilly areas, or on flat ground all the time? Are they driving at high-speeds on freeways, or just through
city streets? And most importantly what speed are they driving it?
