    I agree that the non hybrid Rav seems expensive but the Hybrid, at $800 more is, to me, a good value.

    In fact, I believe that it is even more attractive at the high end where it is equipped nearly as well as a comparable Lexus without having to pay 5 to 6k more for the Lexus badge (not to mention that the equivalent Lexus, the NX, hasn't been upgraded to the gen 4 hybrid system). So, I believe that I am a "frugal" luxury buyer. :)

    My 2019 Rav4 loaded Hybrid Limited listed for just under $40k (before negotiated discount and trade in). A top end CR-V is 5k less but isn't a hybrid (yet) and isn't equipped as well. Loaded Rav4 limited Hybrids are hard to find on dealers' lots. They are selling very well.

    I believe that Toyota will have no trouble selling 40k+ plug ins.

    Edit: Here is another idea. Toyota could have tweaked the styling and released the plug in as a Lexus.

    There’s nothing out of Toyota/Lexus but you can bet an educated guess that the first Lexus PHEV is the NX. (At leads for NA). There are others in the pipeline apparently. (According to Lexus, they’re almost good to go, just waiting for demand or the right timing. Uh huh)

    I saw that too. A nice bonus for those who feel the spare is important. He does highlight that it is a compact spare rather than a full size spare like in other variations of the RAV4, but it doubt that is a big deal to anyone.

    I do find it interesting that Toyota was able to preserve the identical cargo room in the R4P despite a considerably large battery; so does that mean it is under the floor like Tesla and the Leaf? I know in our 16 Leaf, the rear bench is almost “stadium seating”, and the floor is raised a bit, so your knees sit a bit higher. The kids don’t complain, but I found it a bit odd the one or two times I tried sitting back there (though I have never actually ridden in the back, generally driving or front passenger). ;) Just an observation on my part.

    I do like AlexOnAutos though, I find he makes very professional, balanced and informative videos, I think he is one of the best YouTubers in the automotive space. (y)

    OK this has gone in the wrong way. Let me say it again:
    Toyota will have to decide where to go with the Prius brand, IMO only two options:
    - continue as a gas hybrid, with additional solar cells all over the car and slightly bigger battery, it can have a plug but it will remain short AER, primarily for people who can't charge at home.
    - start from scratch and make the most efficient EV, maybe even solid state batteries come in time. Nevertheless Prius means "coming before", it can't be just a normal EV, it must showcase some new technology.

    Prius was newer car for everyone, with BEV the target customer changes from what is Prius today, but even if they go with BEV route, they will sell plenty, no matter if Lee Jay doesn't find it useful for his driving.

    The RAV4 Plug in is very appealing to me especially if its EV range is in the high 30's.

    I would have waited to buy a new car if I knew of this vehicle development.

    My only concern is Toyota's knack for making vehicles like this and the Prius Prime almost unattainable unless you live in certain states.

    A good sign that these will be universally available will be if Toyota Shifts some of there production of these to the Georgetown Ky Plant that has the capability to make over 500,000 vehicles a year. They are already ramping up the RAV4 Hybrid model at the plant and the Plug In would not be that much different. The Kentucky Plant also manufactures the Camry Hybrid and the Avalon Hybrid vehicles currently along with a Lexus Hybrid.

    I’m kinda curious if Toyota is building up inventory ahead of the launch of the RAV4 Prime. It’s rare for Toyota to announce a vehicle that far in advanced. (That said, the Prime was announced at the NYAS in 2016 and launched spring 2017 IIRC).

    "Really? Maybe we can hold onto the Rogue a few more months and see how they did..."

    It may be rare, but it works just fine for preventing the public from buying your competitors current offerings until your new inventory is ready.

    i'm sure if Toyota announced this far in advance - it would NOT be in hopes of to forestalling prospective buyers from jumping ship, as other manufacturers have been known to do on occasion.

    And announcing early helps to put a damper on loyal Toyota buyers who might want the supply constrained current models but now are willing to wait for the shiny new object.

    I’d agree with all of you except you are assuming the general public even knows what a “plug-in” is outside of this community or what’s actually involved with plugging a car in or even more important, why they would need to. I’d also go as far as to say this will the one model where the EVSE will never be used nor plugged in for over half of all sales. Might be a great used car to pick up, though. The battery might be pristine.

    What do you want to bet a couple of genius YouTubers will be stumped to why they can’t match Toyota’s horsepower or 0 - 60 times.

    Which is why Toyota focused on the performance aspect.

    Also if they do, they’ll be flamed as ignorant. There’s enough people now that know how a PHEV works on the internet. It’s not like the early days where people tried to auto-park an LS600h L and don’t bother to learn how APGS works then show that the car failed at parking.

    Two questions.

    Do you think this will have the same 14.5 gallon tank as the 2020 Rav4 hybrid?
    How fast will it be in EV mode versus hybrid mode?

    Based on Prime versus gen 4 Prius, the answers would be "yes" and "same to 30, slower to 60". But I don't think we have information on this one.
