I just want to know if I can stick a bunch of paper grocery bags full of bread and eggs back there, close the hatch and not break/smash anything.

 

Pack the bread over the eggs and you should be good to go. I am compensated well for knowledge such as this.

i could care less about cubic rubrics. i'm more interested in usable space. that requires an in person visit with eyeballs and a tape measure.

But, back to the topic. I am pretty sure the deck height won't hobble most drivers, most of the time. Those that need to carry large volumes of things probably already own another type of vehicle - or a Prius V. Prius Primes won't make a good taxi due to the loss of luggage space. But then, the normal hatchback doesn't make the best taxi either. Last time we had a service pick us up, we were asked if we had large luggage requirements. We didn't, so they sent a driver with a Prius hatchback.

I, for one, don't see a few inches lost in deck height as a major obstacle to ownership. It will be a downsize, but the regular hatchback volume had been spoiling us for many years due to its cavernous size.

 

"Those who need to carry large volumes of things probably own another vehicle". This is less true outside the U.S. where cars cost a lot more. My wife and I here in the UK share one car. A lot of the time we don't carry a lot of cargo. But sometimes we do, and the great thing about hatchbacks is that they are flexible and practical to deal with that too. So for us, and people like us, this is a real issue.

And in the US, the majority would prefer a sedan to a hatchback, if their other vehicle is the one used for moving cargo.

 

but overall, people looking at prime will take the raised floor into consideration as one negative factor weighed against many others, both positive and negative. we bought our first hycam, even though the trunk was small. but it was definitely a part of the decision making process. and we welcomed gen 2 with a modestly larger trunk, and better mpg's to boot.

 

Having a newborn baby I have to carry a stroller so cargo room is important and so is being able put the car seat in the middle. Between the rear seat only holding two people and the lack of cargo I had to pass on the Prime. I bought a 2013 plugin last week. Hopefully they will fix these issues and I can trade my other Prius in on the Prime when it fits my needs

 

Putting the car seat in the middle is a bad idea. I know, it's a little bit safer for the baby in a side impact. But it's way worse for your back and arms every single time you put the baby in the car, and that increases both the chances that you'll get hurt and the chances that you'll drop the little person, again, every single time you put them in the car.

I did it for exactly one week and then moved the seat base to the side.

Besides, once we had our second, there's no way one will fit in the center with another right next to them.

And when they get older, having the seats as far apart as possible is important, and having that console between them is an enormous help (our Mazda 5 has one, and it's really great for them).

Given two kids, the Prime's back-seat arrangement is far superior to that on my regular G2.

 

I'm 40 years old and I'm active. If lifting a 25lbs car seat is going to hurt you then there might be a bigger problem then the seating arrangement. I apologize in advance because I don't mean to be rude. Also I take my wife's parents out to eat often and they need to be able to sit with us. I need seating for 5 people. The safest place for my child in a small car is the middle. Even if I hurt my back I'm willing to do that instead of worry about my child's safety

 

Well, when you do it twenty times a day, and sometimes it's rainy or icy and the handle might be wet or the kid might be moving around, every bit of increased risk is exactly that. And sometimes mom or grandma or aunt whoever will do it too, without as much practice. And it's only 25 pounds for about two weeks. One they are 9 months old and you have toys and other stuff hanging on there, or once they are too big for the carrier, then it rwally gets fun. Try operating a kid proof 5 point restraint from that position. You can't do it. You'll have to get in and get on your knees on the floor of the car.

New parents are funny. There are even commercials about it. And it's true. At first you'll sterilize everything they touch. After a while or when you get another one, you'll just try to keep them from putting their hands in the blender or falling down the stairs face first.
