How many lithium Prius are fielded?

 

Well, I finally got the Prius with the fried traction battery out of it's hide-away parking spot and up to the workshop.
Tried lots of different combinations, but the eventual winner was a light gauge wire from each 5 cell lithium group to the appropriate module voltage sensing wire while it was still connected to the original traction battery. The battery negative and positive were connected at the traction battery side of the contactors, 5 cells from the negative on the lithium battery wired to the far left voltage sensing wire and each 5 cells from there to the next voltage sensing wire.
Turned the Prius on and the engine started selected reverse and it came out of park and into reverse Yeah, so threw all the tools and cable boxes and battery chargers in and drove it back out from beside the house. I was so excited with this progress, I decided I'd drive the 2.5km to our workshop ..... yea, well, first bump and everything died and we rolled to a stop .... but at least the park pawl wasn't engaged now ..... turned out the 12v battery had lost a cell as well in all the excitement, put jumper leads across the contact points under the bonnet and back to life, that was good enough to drive it onto the trailer and drive it off again at the workshop.

So it would seem that 5 cells in series group of lithium cells wired to each voltage sensing wire is enough to fool the Prius computer, 70 cells all up if using LFP cells.
Now to remove all the after market stuff, including the extended range battery and associated control gear, then it can be tilt tray trucked to the local Toyota dealer to do the report for the insurance company ..... fingers cross all goes well from there and they either write it off as a financial write off or pay the required $$ for a replacement traction battery and all the other bits that live in that battery enclosure because all of it was subjected to the fire extinguisher dry powder and apparently that eats anything electronic because it attacks any copper and other metals .....

I too have my battery pack installed and the AC fixed, no more P0AA6. Later this week I'll be test driving it on a road trip for 6hrs round trip.

 

Somebody is going to complain that your gauge is not correct because Prius AC's don't get that cold.
Just warning you..

 

not here, congrats on getting low ac temps! Most of us would kill to get those low temps.

 

It probably got that low because I had the cabin temp set to 65. I had to make sure it got cold.

 

I also just reset my power windows all around. 12v battery was dead. Most procedures kinda weren't accurate but its all good. I basically had to roll down the window THEN hold the switch there for a sec, roll the window up THEN hold the switch there for a sec.

 

There is an individual on Prius chat that knows EVERYTHING about the Prius AC.
NO ONE else knows anything about it. They are wrong!
I have 2 Robinaire thermometers and they read 30 degrees and less sometimes.
Under the right conditions, it will get that cold, and it could freeze up, just like anyone other vehicle.

I'm surprised that he hasn't already come on and write a novel about "us" being wrong!

 

What was the condition of the doors and windows, fresh/recirc setting, fan speed, outside air temp, sun?

 

My mother has a 1998 Ford Escort. 100% bone stock with about 90k? miles. The AC apparently hasn't worked in years. I looked into it a few weeks ago and it seems the escorts have a common problem with a relay module located under the air filter housing going bad (big shoutout to the internet for that info!!). Got a replacement module from salvage yard for a few bucks that had a 2014 date code, installed it and the AC fired right up like a champ. Vent outlet temperture when controls put on MAX AC with all doors open? 35.3 degrees and a hurricane coming out of the vents.........I have no idea if the charge is 100% correct or not, but I'm also not really worried about it. It runs like a beast and will now keep the car whatever temperature you want it to be, even in Columbia sweatbox weather. After seeing that, I'd be willing to believe just about anything.

I tried to post another photo yesterday, but being our first day of this new lockdown, I was at home and the cat decided he would try out the keyboard to see what was so interesting ........ took me a while to sort out what he'd done :lol:

So, here we go, second time lucky maybe



The burn marks and buckling of the traction battery top cover can be seen along with the melted nylon vent tube links where the fire melted them away, the pieces missing out the top of a few modules and the shape of the battery pack along with where the pressure was so great it tore the bar across the top out of the end plate.
You can also see just how much powder there still is in there after the dry chemical extinguisher was unleashed through the opened end of the buckled top cover ......

I didn't realise this was just a promotional thread for Jacktheripper's product ..... I was just putting the burnt traction battery up for all to see in answer to a few posts questioning if I was making it all up, that the original traction battery didn't catch fire .... they say a picture says a thousand words so I posted the pictures .......

you shouldn’t have to worry because there’s really no guidelines here to follow, all threads usually cadences to egr cleaning.

 

??? So you're saying the battery did NOT catch fire? Was it something else and the battery
just got sprayed?

 

Not quite my point. Your fire, was it LFP or NiMH? I wouldn't want to scare potential @jacktheripper customers if it was the OEM NiMH that burned and not your LFP....
