Rain water in the hatch?

I was surprised to find a square hole behind my back license plate when I took the temp tag off to install the permanent plate. There appears to be a drain hole at the bottom of the hatch directly below this hole. Outside of washing the car without the rear license plate I doubt if water will get in there, but I had planned to do exactly that when warm weather returns prior to doing a careful "wax" (Zanio) job on the whole car including the paint under the plate. I will put a small patch of tape over it while washing.

Water out of the drain hole is outside of the rear hatch seal.
