Since this will be dedicated outlet (single 20A 120V outlet) ... I am told that I will remain in compliance with codes. I plan on not making it a GFCI due to the tripping issue. I will not be using it for any other purpose.

The only time my GFI tripped was during a thunder storm.

Connect to an AC 120 V outlet (NEMA 5-15R) with a Ground-
Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) and a circuit breaker. Use of a
15A individual circuit is strongly recommended to ensure
    charging cable will operate properly.
When charging outdoors, make sure to connect to a weatherproof
outlet that is certified for outdoor use.
    Checking Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) operation
    before its use is recommended.

Just to make you feel better. I have had my plug-in for 16 months and have never had a tripping issue, ever!!!!
I followed the above to the T ! I did use 12 gauge wire,
If you plan on 220v charging in the future 12 gauge can work, but you might consider running 10 gauge wire to help future proof. :)
So if you have a 20A GFCI I am sure you will have no problem at all!
    Enjoy your Plug-in ! :D

Thanks for the info. So did you use GFCI breaker or a GFCI outlet. Those GFCI breakers are more expensive than GFCI outlets.

Just the 15A breaker in the house, 12 gauge wire to garage and GFCI outlet in garage.

If you're absolutely positively certain that PiP's (or other plug-in you may own some day) will never charge any faster on 240v than the current on board charger charges at ... you'll do just fine with only a 20 amp circuit. If subsequent Rev's (that you may own) charge faster though, you'll be hosed ... as the wire gauge (and length of run) that you use NOW, determines how much you can upgrade to a heavier breaker in the future. It's not that much more to go heavier. We put in a 40 amp breaker and matching gauged wire, so that we can charge at 7.5kW's. Our forward thinking paid off just a few days ago, as a plug-in stopped by - that utilized the faster / higher power current:

In one hour, they got enough juice from us to travel almost 30 miles. Can't do that on a 20amp circuit. Mind you, it'll only matter if you get a quicker charging plug-in some time down the road. Personally I like to be over prepared for tomorrow ... but maybe that's just me.

NEC recommends 8 ga for 40A.
