[Q] No respect and bad road manner from other driver?

    really? they should post that. i drove all the way to florida at 45 mph, and i wasn't in a tractor.:cool:

    So they can give out tickets ether way. Back to the original subject I have a NRA sticker and a Sig Sauer sticker on my lower back window and people tend to leave me alone.

    try 25 mph or lower.

    You really don't want to follow. They need to take the back roads. Some need 1 and 1/2 lanes. Some only do 15 mph.

    If there weren't a sign on the highway, they would be there.

    am not going to ask any cops, they are not exactly authority figures for me. problem is when people drive outside the flow of traffic, too slow or too fast. that creates traffic disturbance, changing line, sudden braking, and accidents. ask profession drivers, like lar.smith42.

    the fact there is even discussion here about something that is common sense is very revealing.

    Of course it is your fault. You are violating the Basic Speed Law, by driving faster than is safe for present conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.

    If you cannot handle a car ahead with taillights driving at 45, or 55 as in a previous post, how are going to handle a large boulder fallen off the roadside cuts, a tree blown down over the road, or a herd of mountain sheep/goats ambling slowly across the road?

    Near my aunt & uncle's home in rural Montana, an interstate trucker recently killed more than a dozen wild mountain sheep in a single crash, then was furious at MDOT for failing to keep them off the road. Sorry, that is not MDOT's responsibility, it is the driver's responsibility to avoid them.

    FWIW, the places I usually drive don't have nighttime speeds limits as high as 75. Most don't even have daytime limits that high.

    PS. From today's IIHS report, its first ever rating of headlights:

    "The Prius v's LED low beams should give a driver traveling straight at 70 mph enough time to identify an obstacle on the right side of the road, where the light is best, and brake to a stop," says Matthew Brumbelow, an IIHS senior research engineer. "In contrast, someone with the halogen lights would need to drive 20 mph slower in order to avoid a crash."

    Among the 44 headlight systems earning a poor rating, the halogen lights on the BMW 3 series are the worst. A driver with those headlights would have to be going 35 mph or slower to stop in time for an obstacle in the travel lane. ..."

    So what you are saying is that I'm violating the base speed law by driving the speed limit during daylite hours in dry conditions and the driver that is going 20 to 30mph below the speed limit is not unsafe for present conditions.

    I would handle that by not running over the idiot trying to pass me and ether taking out the object in front of me or running off the right side. I see your from up north most of the speed limits here are 75 with some in OK at 80. Try driving a 18 wheeler some time with a tight schedule to keep.

    Im talking about a truck at 80,000 lbs not a car at 3,000lbs can't switch lanes as fast or stop as FAST

    All else being equal, it is never the slower vehicle that is most exceeding the Basic Speed Law. It will have an easier time avoiding or stopping for slow or stationary hazards on the road.

    Numerous places I drive, you can't run off the right side. The rock wall there is probably what shed the boulder blocking your lane in the first place.

    BTW, the other side is frequently a river or canyon.

    Here, there are no 75 mph speeds limits anywhere. And throughout the state, commercial trucks are capped at 60 mph.

    I am a proponent of railroads, for both safety and for energy efficiency.

    Except for bulk petroleum products. The safest way to move them is via pipeline.

    The same Basic Speed Law applies. See reduced speed limits, above. See railroad safety comments, above.

    I don't pretend that a majority of drivers obey this law. But we must acknowledge the very widespread violations of it.

    Im not going to try discussing this any further except to say if you want to replace trucks with the railroad you better start building a lot of track. What ever you own or buy the gas you use was brought to you buy a truck.

    I agree that there are no prectical replacements for trucks for short hauls, from the railyards and marine docks and pipeline terminals to local customers. (Our regional airport is directly on a pipeline branch.)

    But we must acknowledge the widespread violation of Basic Speed Law.

    Don't drive so fast that you could not stop in time to avoid a collision.

    I'll drink to that. And it's close relative:

    Don't cut over the centerline on blind corners.

    I can understand that getting into this situation would be a problem, so why not be proactive and avoid it? If another vehicle is beside you as you are approaching a blind crest, why not just ease off a touch so that they move ahead and free you so you can move into the left lane if a DA hypermiler (or farm tractor or mobile home or school bus or whatever) is going <75mph in the right lane just over the crest? Easing off will save fuel, and the downhill after the crest will help you get back up to speed. I rode motorcycles a LOT for 30 years (commuting daily on I-95) and learned to spend as little time as possible at speed alongside or close behind other vehicles, especially semis. Either by speeding up or slowing down (speeding up not being an option for an 18-wheeler!).

    I agree with Chuck that there's a lot of bad driving out there, both people who can't drive and people who are not paying attention. It's crucial to drive to accommodate a range of behaviors in others, whether speeding or slower drivers, or people who just are not looking.

    As a DA hypermiler, I feel it's my responsibility to pay as much attention behind me as I used to pay to traffic ahead of me when I was a DA speeder. And be prepared to take evasive action as needed in either case. I've also learned not to look to the side at traffic passing me, what's the point? Increasingly windows are so tinted you can't see people inside the car anyway. On interstates I stay to the right and people can simply use the lanes to my left to pass (assuming they are capable of changing lanes). On two-lane secondary roads I try to maintain the speed limit if traffic is behind me, but keep alert for clear road behind me and if so go slower if that works for me.
