Professional EGR Cleaning Resources

    We spoke with Todd at Tampa Hybrids, and he told us of the importance of keeping the EGR system maintained in order to save the head gasket. He does them at 100,000 miles. My Prius had 120,000 miles on it, and this hadn't been done.
    Since we don't live in Tampa, I asked our mechanic if he does this, and he said yes, but he doesn't clean the old parts, he buys new from Toyota. This is how he guarantees his work. I spent just a little over $1800 to have it all done. He saved my old parts and I will clean them. They are totally clogged up with carbon.
    His name is Prim, he works at Dube's Auto in Clearwater, but he doesn't service the hybrid system itself. He worked on our ICE cars for over 10 years.
    There is a shop in Clearwater that does hybrid work, but I've never been there. It's called Green Tech Auto, the manager is Scott. 800-773-6614.
    U Tube has some very good videos on this, I would never consider trying it myself.

    My dealer will do it for $800 with a new cooler. A know a guy who will do it for much less but only if you are an existing customer with a previous repair of some significance. He has a permeant backlog of more important work than just fixing something difficult that is not broke. Dealers will fix it if its not broken if you pay enough.

    $1800! WOW! Well, as long as he did a good job.
    You should learn to do it yourself. For the money you WON'T spend paying someone else,
    you can buy all the tools and parts you'll need.

    Anyway, next time around, he shouldn't charge you more than about $400~500. Say in 50k miles.

    Dube's is never cheap. But they are one of the most honest and most thorough shops I've ever used. He does give me a dollar or two off labor sometimes, and there is a discount for not using your bank card.

    No, he used the old one. Todd at Tampa Hybrids charges a little bit less -$200, and uses all the old parts, takes the time to clean them, but he's almost an hour drive, and I can't hang around in Tampa all day without my wheels.
    Frankly, 1800 was steep, but i don't know how anyone can do this for 500. A shop around here charging that much would probably go broke.
    And I won't attempt it myself, don't have a place to work on my car, and I have a short temper with inanimate objects. One busted open knuckle, and I miss gigs with my band.

    Well it's nice to know what people are paying and all that sort of thing I guess. It's a couple hour job if you already got the parts pre-cleaned and sitting in your storage and pretty much have it all straightened out pretty quick but yeah 1800 cool.

    My 13 persona is close to that mileage now . It's on its second engine . The first failed with me driving . Right after I bought the car when I bought the car it started and ran like a brand new Prius and was pretty clean two owners and the two owners live next door to each other in Virginia It was driven down a dirt driveway everyday until I got it. I would have probably not been able to save the first engine. Now that I have the second engine in I should be able to carry this thing to close to 500,000 maybe a tad over if someone doesn't plow into it before The two Z's and Corollas and other cars that are newer say 2010 up all have a similar EGR cooler now I don't know if the Corolla has the clogging EGR passage problem because it's not an Atkinson cycle engine. I don't think anyway. So the Corolla regular 2Z car not the hybrid isn't regurgitating its own puke. Or something along those lines or is it only the two ZFXE hybrid that gets the EGR cooler. The other day when I was looking in a Corolla I don't think it was a hybrid it has the two z engine the EGR cooler and a valve that looks very much like the Prius but the cooler shorter and smaller but I did not go behind the car or look at anything close enough I don't believe it was a hybrid but correct me if I'm wrong about the Atkinson cycle.

    To anyone changing/cleaning the EGR cooler... do NOT take that bottom stud/bolt off the engine block! I was following the official Toyota process for EGR cooler removal/installation. They say to take all 4 stud/bolts off and then when re-assembling, get the EGR cooler back in place before putting the studs/bolts back on. It's damn near impossible to get that one back on with the EGR cooler in the way. They must have pulled the engine from the car before executing this ridiculous procedure. When in doubt, follow the "nuts and volts" video procedure.

    That nut and stud are easy to remove and reinstall.
    You need SnapOn 1/4 inch wrenches and sockets.

    Some people do not reinstall the stud or nut.
