Believe me, I wasn't questioning anything....I know only too well how what seem to be fixed and stationary objects can jump out and grap you . Only the other month I watched my neighbour drive into her driveway, something she must had done thousands of times, and take out the front wing on the gate post .....she was also driving a CRV! It was just the way DrJon phrased his reply...it really tickled me! Glad you were alright anyway, seen too many nasty injuries in that type of car verses immovable object accident.

Cars have undergone a lot of weight and size bloat over the years. Part of the bloat is due to safety. I don't See No Stinking Minicars - Column - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver. I have a gen 2 and mine has a curb weight of 2890 lbs. which is significantly below medium sized cars of that era. You can see the average US light vehicle fleet weight via the info I provided earlier. I do worry about all the monstrosity class aka full-sized SUVs (curb weight of 5000+ lbs.) running around.
I'm more concerned about my weight than the weight of my Prius. How heavy should a car be? Should go buy some lead ballast?
Excuse me for being rude, but why are you complaining about weight when you bought a car for basically fuel mileage? If you want a heavy car, there are plenty of suvs around that carry 5000lbs and burn gas for no real reason. Trucks don't have the same safetyy features as cars anyway. Lastly comparing your old vw rustbucket to a brand new car is like comparing an old 386dx computer to a new intel 7x. It makes absolutely no sense.
Cossie1600, I wasn't complaining - just asked a question and I appreciated the responses I received which indicated that the G-3 is a well-built and adequately-heavy car. I didn't know I had an "old VW rustbucket". I bought it new in Europe in 1964 as I was finishing a tour of duty in the US Navy and I sold it two years later, in excellent condition, for the same price I paid for it to buy the 66 Mustang. I only mentioned my previous cars because I found it revealing, from the safety viewpoint, that the new Prius is considerably heavier than the average weight of all of them. I hadn't realized that.
