Maybe it's time I got a F650 XUV. Plenty of room for all three kids (and all of their friends as well).

with that huge thing you might as well drive a school bus if the intent is to cart around kids

give it a lot of thought- three kids in the back is a lot but others have done it well enough.

one thing to think about is that if another accident were to happen (knock on wood) that you know how well the prius protected you.

at any rate, good luck with your decision and i hope you can get compensation for all the cool stuff you put in your car.

A Mazda 5 is what I got, for a second car, to seat 6. It will indeed seat four full-size adults and two kids. Tiny footprint for being able to carry six - essentially the same lxw as the Prius, but taller. If you only need to carry 5 there are lots of choices with decent mileage (e.g. Escape hybrid). For 6, few -- which is how I ended up buying this one. It's a nice enough car and so far I've averaged a little over 29 mpg with the manual transmission. That's over EPA but I drive it gently. I even like the sound system, guess I'm easy to please in that regard.

I considered the Hybrid Highlander with a 3rd seat, but decided I wanted a smaller vehicle and didn't really want an SUV. Not at all sure I made the optimum choice but the Mazda 5 is fine.

Doc, I just wanted to say that 3 seconds one way or the other and it would have been the guy in front of you or the guy behind you. Realizing that's cold comfort it still should be said.

ya i knew yours would be totaled. my 2004 didnt even have half the damage yours had and it was totaled. as for a replacement, i still say the Prius is best on the road. now for family, another car might be the way to go. im guessing you had two vehicles, what is your other car?

    Doc Vijay-
How sad. I once stopped at a 4-way stop in the evening rain and didn't see a red truck cross the intersection right in front of me. I accelerated and bashed right into it. Just before the impact my mind registered that it was there, but there was nothing I could do but plow right into it. I imagine you have a slo-mo video of your accident that plays repeatedly in your mind too. My heart goes out to you.

Thank you to all who recommend Rain-X. I will look for it and give it a try.

Well, the Prius is officially gone. I signed it away and picked up the check yesterday.

Kinda disappointed in what I'm left with, certainly won't buy a car, but oh well, that's life, right?

This whole thing is just one of those curve balls that life throws at you just gotta deal with...

Anyway, I decided to get another Toyota, but of a slightly different type. I am going to get a Toyota Tundra CrewMax Limited (2nd choice to the Prius was Ford F350!). Yes, it's big. Yes, it gets crappy mileage. But I like it, and I can get all the stuff I had in the Prius as well (nav, safety features, Bluetooth). Also, surprisingly, it did better overall in the IIHS crash tests that the Highlander Hybrid, which is what I originally wanted. That was probably the most important factor for me.

I've been very happy with all the Toyotas I've had, so I figured I'd stick with them.

Plus, TRD makes a supercharger for the Tundra... ;)

What happened to the Lotus? ;) hehe

not bad. The Tundra is huge though.. and isn't the CrewMax Limited basically the fully loaded one?

Wow Doc I'm sorry I missed this...

What an ordeal! I hope the healing process has been working on you in the weeks since the accident. It doesn't sound to me like there was anything you could do. I think about this a lot, both in the community where I live and the town my office is in there is a lot of pedestrian traffic, and they just walk out into the road without looking all the time. I can't even imagine what you must be going through...

I'd be glad it was totalled, I don't think I could keep it after it being connected with such a horrible event...

    Good luck!

Well, the Lotus is still coming, but it'll be a bit delayed. I hadn't planned on needing another car as well.

Yes, the Limited is the fully loaded one. It has all the package 8 Prius has.

    Something to consider for you:
    - I looked at the story and feel sympathy for all parties involved
    - I looked at the photos of your damaged Prius and became concerned, realizing that the indentations and damage to your car was done by a human body hitting it
    - You've posted those photos for the reasons you stated, and I believe you meant no malice whatsoever; however, those photos are going to be circulating electronically, probably forever, and there's no telling where they may end up. Relatives and friends of those who died may come across them at some stage, hard to tell, but can you imagine what they may feel, seeing those photos and realizing that it's their loved one who had been hit by that car...
    - With sympathy, perhaps you will consider taking those photos off your original post. It's distressing enough to see the damage, with the realization of what a living being suffered to cause that damage, but those pictures can become a constant, gruesome reminder of that tragic event, both to yourself and to the families and friends of those women who died - do you really want that?

I kept imagining what I would feel like in your shoes. This was completely unavoidable and I hope you can sink that reality deep into your soul. It could have happened to any one of us. I hope you can come to terms with it quickly, get your car fixed and move on.

There but for the grace of God go I...

I heard about the accident the next morning from my co-worker who was watching the news. She said when she heard the story that a prius was involved in the accident, she hoped it wasn't me. I had just gotten my prius..silver in color as well. I live in Lakeland, Fl. I travel on I-4 often and I know exactly where the Hard Rock Casino is at. I can't imagine the girls' state of mind to try to cross that interstate when cars are traveling at 70 miles/hour and not to mention the weather condition at the time. Anyone who is familiar with traffic there will understand why the drivers were not charged. It is like crossing a 6 lane freeway in L.A. It was a price they paid for a bad decision; no one else is to blame. Yes, I feel bad for the families but sometimes they are left to deal with the consequences.

I was at the casino a month ago for girls night out. It was my first visit there. I didn't see anyone winning anything :(

I'm new to the Forum here. I mean you no offense. I feel very sorry for what happened to you sir and do not want to upset you further but you must be aware that you could still possibly be sued for wrongful death. It does not matter if you were not charged. If it was me I would not be discussing any of the details of this tragic accident with anyone much less an online forum. I think if I was the family of the deceased I would be very upset with the posts here and the photo's you posted. You must not have an attorney engaged because if you did they would be horrified if they knew your were discussing this on the Internet. Be very careful.

You may have a point here but unlikely due to the entire circumstances. With that said, this forum may be an outlet or a kind of therapy for this person to talk about it. It is public knowledge around here..I mean where we live. I think it will do more good for this person to talk about it than to keep it bottled up inside. Just my opinion.

To those who posted their concerns about this thread: I'm fully aware of the entire situation. I'm a 3rd year law student, so that law is not unknown to me. There is nothing in this thread that gives me or my attorney any concern. I have posted nothing factual or any details other than a link to a publicly available news story. The rest is my emotional journey and others' responses to it. Thank you though.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, here it is a month later, and while it certainly has gotten much better, this incident still shadows me like some malicious phantom. I'm glad to say that I am able to sleep in peace (usually), but it still enters my thoughts several times each day.

The single hardest part today is that I still drive that route every day when returning from school. I still get a knot in my stomach every time I drive over that last overpass before the place it happened. That is not getting any better.

What I am most relieved about is that the accident doesn't repeatedly play through my mind like it did for the first couple of weeks. That was the worst part. No matter what I did, it kept replaying in my mind, over and over, regardless of what I tried thinking about. It's like I was able to take it an place it in a box. I can't see it directly, but I can see the box, and I know what is in the box. Most of the time it just sits there, but if I think about what's there, then it comes back again.

I'm also finding that everyday life has many things that continually remind me of things. And I'm talking about the obvious things, like when I speak to my insurance company or researching a new car. Those are the obvious ones. If I'm driving to school and I see Prius, it comes back. There have been times I read something that made me think about it. All kinds of little things, that before would not have even registered in my mind, now suddenly are significant things that all take me back to that day.

For example, one class I have right now is Insurance, and we were discussing various types of policies. Auto insurance came up, and the professor asked if anyone had been in an accident recently. It felt like I had been punched in the gut.

It's obvious that this will be here for a long time. I'm just glad it is getting better. If things were still like the first two weeks...

have you seen any kind of counselor? it might help to try to sort things out with a professional who spends their days helping folks through traumatic incidents. of course we all have our natural process, but you might learn ways to cope with it that hadn't occurred to you yet.

    best to ya, Doc.

My Dear Husband saw someone on a bike get hit at the base of a bridge (my DH was several vehicles away).
That was several (over 10) years ago.
To this day, when we drive over that bridge and reach "that spot"... he gets a knot in his stomach.

yes, counselling is a good idea, but take comfort in the fact that you are reacting as you are, because you are human. This is normal. In fact, I think it's a good thing.
