Well, going by that logic Ford shouldn't be making Energi's - nor should Nissan be making Leafs.

If the Prius v volumes are not good, would Toyota drop the line ?

There is always some risk in new projects. There is also risk in not doing some projects.

Margin development cost of Prius v Plug-In will not be large now that Toyota already has PIP & Prius v. Toyota can leverage the investment by putting the techonology in more vehicles - that can only increase the volume. Being a mass market OEMs, Toyotas & Nissans need to sell in large volumes to recover the cost of development and start making money.

And thus Ford and Nissan are taking some well calculated risks. I mean GM and Nissan both revealed their idea of what the next generation of vehicles should be and Nissan seems to be taking the lion share of that crowd.

Toyota took a risk with original Prius (esp. in sedan form. There was a hatchback in the design process that was declined).

Seriously though, what else could you say. Theres always a better mousetrap coming down the line, consumers just need to balance how much they are willing to wait compared to how much they don't want to miss out on whats available now.

Seems llkely to me Toyota will eventually produce products to compete with Energi, Fusion plug in, and Accord plug-in.

We've struggled NOT getting 2 of Toyota's new offerings. If I'd have purchased the original Gen III upon its 1st arrival, and, if we'd have purchased the Prius v upon its 1st arrival, only to find out the (NEW TERM) "PiP v" is as near as this fall? ... even possibly? - I swear ... I'd have gotten so up tight, that I'd have shot blood out a hemorrhoid. NO FLYBRIDGE, and a v model that plugs'in ??

Between these statements, and Erica inferring the PiP-v announcement was put out there in SOME country - well, the U.S. can't be far behind.
    (wiping tear from eye)
My sense of smell says, "OH YEA ... it's REAL real"
All we personally need to do how is prepare dump the 6 year old Lexus SUV hybrid, and pick out the new color.

If "soon" had a specific meaning I would find this post informative.

Sorry, I find this thread somewhat perversely amusing.

The last thing Toyota or anyone selling Toyota's wants, is a flood of PiP buyers cancelling orders to await a non-existent product.

What someone in Toyota management has to do, or should do, is contact the NY times and explain that their statement is false. At least get a retraction.

Of course the follow up questions from the NY times would be "Do You Plan to Market a Plug In Prius V Wagon? and if so when?

Maybe it's not coming anytime "soon"...but perhaps it's still soon enough that Toyota would rather NOT give those answers?

Otherwise, a simple retraction solves this problem.

If I were being sane, I would wait to see the Ford C-Max Energi, for greater capacity and possibly better ride. Given prior Toyota doubts about LI-ON batteries and plug ins, I'm sure they will wait and see how it goes, and go slow on rolling out other plug ins. But it still seems likely they will have to respond to all these alternative plug ins coming out, and in particular, a more spacious model V plug in to match the Energi.

In a similar vein, I'm trying to talk my wife into holding off on getting a new HyCam, since I believe they will come out with a plug in version within a couple of years, to compete with the Fusion and Accord plug ins. She might even prefer the Accord, since she had one before.

Finally, I would bet big bucks on a Lexus plug in showing up this year or next, with the most likely candidate being the CT, or possibly the rumored hybrid ES.

Sorry, not buying it. That statement is as non-sensational and hidden as it gets. I won't be surprised if someone at Toyota PR unintentionally revealed something.

I think a Plug In Prius V, makes great sense as a product. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't exist someday.

Unfortunately the NY times gave a specific time frame which evidently is not accurate.

"Soon" is subjective and up to interpretation. If it's more that 2 years out? I certainly wouldn't wait if I wanted a vehicle today.

You can wait the rest of your life for the next bigger or better plug in to come along. Better to enjoy what's out there now. I knew people who were waiting to buy their first color TVs 15 years after they came on the market. They wanted to make sure they were perfected. :D I'm looking forward to my new PIP, knowing Toyota it's going to perform very well :)

Im pretty sure Toyota will release a plugin v sometime later this year or early next year because Ford is releasing the Cmax Energi this fall(it's on ther site). Ford claims it will outperform the prius V and here's a little of what they claim.

    - The C-MAX Hybrid will achieve better EPA fuel economy ratings than the Toyota Prius v. Ford didn’t mention the regular Prius, so we could assume that C-MAX Hybrid fuel economy will fall somewhere in that Prius sandwich.
    - When in electric mode, the C-MAX Energi is targeted to deliver a better fuel economy equivalent (MPGe) than the Toyota Prius PHEV. Ford said this enables C-MAX Energi to have an overall driving range of 500 miles (about 800 km).
-Both C-MAX models will use Ford’s new-generation “power split” hybrid technology, enabling the vehicles to operate in electric-only mode, gas engine-only mode, or a combination of both.

Im pretty sure Toyota is not gonna sit back and let ford introduce a plugin version similar to the v and do nothing.
