Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon...) Wagon (only) MPG - Please Post Your Results

Interesting data point: I tried reducing my tire pressure to the Toyota recommended 33 front and 32 rear. (The car came from the dealer with about 36 IIRC) My MPG dropped over 10%!

Needless to say, I increased it, this time back to 39 front and 38 rear. I can see the average steadily increasing although I don't have a new MPG to report yet. I had no idea it would make that much difference!

Also, the ride was much spongier at the lower pressure.

We have now driven our v for 1500 miles and are averaging 44.3 MPG (display). It's about 60/40 city/highway. Anything above the EPA rating is great.

 

Is the display accurate. I know in our Prius it is off at about 3.5 mpg.

For instance if it reads 50 mpg calculated will be 46-47 mpg.

Looks like Toyota has finally corrected the mpg guage display
error after nearly three years. I do anticipate that the other
2012 Toyota hybrids will also have corrected displays.

FYI, there are plenty others (like myself) who are consistently getting up to over 3MPG more on the computer calculated figures vs the hand calculated figures. I've had 3 fill ups so far, here are my results for our Prius v Three:

I'm also getting about 5% more optimistic numbers on the display than the hand calculations.

I noticed that the Scangauge II has an MPG function with calibration. Anyone know if that calibration also affects the built-in display on the car?

 

Now have 3254 odometer reading, and have used 72.115 gals. This calculates to 45.12 MPG. The displayed MPG is 47.7 . That is about 2.65 higher displayed than caculated. Somewhat disappointed on this amount of difference of mpg, but over all well satisfied with most other aspects of this v. Driving is not aggresive, over relatively flat terrain and temp. around 60 to 77 degrees for the last 1800 miles. Prior to that, hilly terrain and 40's to 55's degree temp. The tire psi is approx 36 front, 35 rear.

 

1st fuel up:
407 miles 10.05 gals 40.5mpg
First tank and learning to drive. Probably 50/50 freeway and commute
2nd fuel up:
300 miles 5.88 gals 51.0 mpg
85% commute and trying to get good mileage
3rd fuel up:
360 miles 9.89 gals 36.4 mpg
San Fran trip, freeway 95% of miles with 3 people and 70mph.

Took a 900 mile trip to Florida this week. Recorded 45.8 mpg on the first tank, and 48.4 on the second tank. Current running total for the first 4,000 miles since new is 44.9. This is calculated, not using the on-board computer, which is always high.

 

It does not affect the accuracy of the on-board gauge.

 

My last tank was 45 MPG. Looking good.

 

So, Wuster, you're saying the hybrid CR-V has been produced--just by Toyota instead of Honda?

I am the original owner of an '06 CR-V EX with no problems and 44,353 miles. Have been thinking about a Prius V wagon, as it seems to be the closest thing to a hybrid CR-V out there in terms of cargo capacity. Just don't know if I want to spend the $25K to $27K when I don't need the car for daily commuting. What year was your CR-V? Did it serve you well?

 

Just curious how fast you drove on your trip and if you used any techniques to get the MPG you got? We just took a near 400 mile (each way) trip from Northern California to Southern California and we averaged only 39.45MPG so far, this was calculated, the computer said 42.5. We were driving on average in the low 70s down I-5 to so cal and rarely sped up to do any passing. I'm wondering if there is anything we can do on the drive back up to nor cal to get MPG like yours.

 

As an experiment, I did a tank on "regular" mode (no ECO, only used PWR on a couple of onramps). My calculated mileage (again, making no attempt to drive efficiently) dropped from approx 37MPG to 33MPG.

 

Agreed. However, since I drove pretty much the same places/times/distances as I ever do, and the weather hasn't changed appreciably, there was no need to mention those things.

The bigger concern, scientifically speaking, is drawing a conclusion based on one tank. Take anecdotes as you will.

 

@pdp; I have been driving like you or even more aggressive. I have been driving my Prius v5 w/ATP like my 2000 Lexus RX300. That means average speed on hwys is 75mph even up hills. But speed kills MPG stats as detailed in this good writeup:

So if you want better MPG you will have to slow down. When you do the math you don't lose very much time by going slower. I have started to tell people that my wife's 08 Prius 5 makes it fun to drive economically and my Prius V5 makes it fun to drive aggressive again. I only have one tank (411 miles) tracked on fuelly and it reports 38.3 MPG. I'm treating that as a worst case MPG because I have been driving aggressively, testing all the driving modes (Eco, Normal, Power, EV when the car wants to in this cold weather), warming up 1 -2 min while Grammy gets it the car, tire pressure 35front/34 rear, cold temps 20s - 50s.
