Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon...) Wagon (only) MPG - Please Post Your Results

About 65k miles on my '12 v, got it last November and it's my primary car since my Trans Ams and new '16 Charger RT are stored for the winter. With the exception of a snow storm / ice storm back in early January (38 mpg?) I'm ranging 45-47 mpg tankfuls of mostly highway commuting. When the temperatures finally improve I guess I should expect better? If so, mega impressed.

Running new Michelin x ice tires with pressures at 37 ish psi if I recall (haven't reset since the temperatures dropped).

 

Just traded in my 2012 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon. Only 2010 Prius used uppercase Roman numerals for model designation) 5 for a 2017 Prius Prime premium. The v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon. Only 2010 Prius used uppercase Roman numerals for model designation)had 125,000 and the lifetime mpg was 51.6 but the lifetime calculated mpg was 48.86, a 5.3% difference. Loved that car. Looking forward to driving the Prime. Also ran the tires on the v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon. Only 2010 Prius used uppercase Roman numerals for model designation)at 65 psi and they lasted 100k.

They were (Yokohama?) Blue Earth tires. OEM

 

Never heard of those being OEM. Are they really sidewall-rated for 65psi?

 

No they were rated as usual 40 something, but after a lot of research, I found that 65 worked for me. I started overinflating with my 99 Solara and found mileage increases and tire life also increases. My Solara tires usually lasted 75k-80k.

 

I'd say you were lucky in several respects.

 

Somehow at 65PSI I'd wonder at the traction in stopping or foul weather conditions. I notice a difference at much over 40.

 

I noticed no difference. Not 1 problem in 125k miles.

 

65 PSI? For real? On my Xb I ran the tires at 44 and the belts kept separating. On my v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon. Only 2010 Prius used uppercase Roman numerals for model designation) I run 44 to be safe and have had no problems.

 

i wouldn't exceed the max wall rating, but ymmv.

 

Yes, 65 psi for about 90k of that 100k. Not 1 problem except for a screw in the sidewall on one of them at about 70k. I followed a hypermiler forum for a while and some of the guys ran their tires even higher. No one ever had a blowout due to pressure, it's always too low pressure that causes blowouts..

 

OK, a very belated update.

Last August, we took our Prius v on another mondo road trip (this time 3800 miles: California --> Nevada --> Utah --> Colorado --> Wyoming -->Nebraska --> South Dakota --> Wyoming --> Colorado --> New Mexico --> Arizona --> back to California.

The trip included climbs to 11,000 ft (I-70 Eisenhower Tunnel) and 14,200 ft (Mount Evans). A/C running except when we were high up in the Rockies.

Overall MPG (A/C running most of the time, MPG based on gas consumption, not the overly optimistic trip computer): 46.

Highlights? Visiting family/friends in the Denver area, local rock-and-roll talent plus the total solar eclipse at Toadstock just outside of Alliance NE, the surprisingly scenic Black Hills, Devil's Tower, many scenic diversions in the Rockies (Mt. Evans, Kenosha Pass aspens, etc.), Petrified Forest National Park (very cool), Flagstaff and Sedona. And of course, the car's bulletproof performance for the whole trip.

Lowlights? Driving through Phoenix at 9PM when it was still 106F, and spending the night at a motel in Gila Bend (100+F at 10PM).

The one nice thing I can say about Gila Bend: if you have your gas/electricity cut off in the summer, you can still take hot showers!. There's no such thing as cold running water there in August.

I would say I typically get gas mileage in the 40-42 MPG range, but my best so far has been 54.5 MPG (actively trying) and my worst tank somewhere around 37-38 MPG. Having owned my car long enough now to experience two summers and two winters, I seem to get better mileage in winter (I live in the Phoenix, Arizona area). Lately I've been getting 44-46 MPG tanks. The weather has been in the 80's during the daytime, so I haven't had to use A/C very much recently.

 

Had my first routine fill-up since getting my Prius v today (and an unfortunate run-in with a bird).

Indicated 43.8 MPG, actual 42.6 MPG. Running in Eco mode with occasional switches to Power mode for merging on highways. Lots of stop-and-go traffic. Considering the circumstances around my commute I'm beyond satisfied.

 

first post - 2015 prius v bought certified preowned day before cross country road trip: colorado to california and back. 600lbs payload, bone stock. 2200 miles on interstate at 80+ mph thru mountains w/ AC on 75% of trip, cruise control on. 650 miles in northern California at 45-60 mph. Stayed in Eco mode whole trip. Averaged 34.7 mpg (hand calc'd) according to gas receipts and 2850 miles on trip odometer. Curious, if mileage on trip computer normally reads high (mine reads 36.9 mpg for trip A), but none of my hand calc'd mileage was over 36 mpg, and some were below 34 mpg.

 

80+ will certainly reduce the MPG all right.

Check to be sure you have Low Rolling Resistance tires and that they have about 40 PSI front 39 PSI rear

 

And yes the trip computer reports are inflated by approx 6% over my hand calculations on my 2012 Prius v.
