U.S. gas was never over $4/gallon except in California twice (2008 and 2012). The national average has always been much lower. Furthermore, 76.7 cents of ($3.25/gallon) is tax on California's gasoline. I'd much rather be paying $2.50 if I had the choice. Maybe Toyota should reconsider selling V's just for Californians then, because as I said before..the Hybrid market is VERY competitive here and they are making a big mistake considering gas is so expensive here.

Love my v and my DIL has one too. Bet there are 20 in our development. But the market has spoken. Sadly I don't see anything comparable available now in a wagon or CUV format. The Rav4h is a bit long in the tooth and the Honda CRV won't be available in Hybrid form for another year.

Or someone at Toyota has a notion, that all the Prius customers look like this:

You might want to look beyond your state some more. The national average price in 2008 was $4.11. So it was over $4 for much of the country then, and that was one of the best years for Prius sales.

Pennsylvania actually has the highest gas tax in the nation at over 58 cents. California's recently went up, but is still lower at 42 cents. The 18.4 cent federal is added to both. I just filled up at $2.70 a gallon. It is CARB's policies pushing up your gas prices.

The Prius v was selling over 3000 a month its first year, but the amount has dropped steadily through the years. For 2017, it has yet to break a 1000 a month. California alone isn't going to save it if the entire country can't.

I just filled up at $2.20 a gallon. Previous fillup was at $2.01.

I live in CA, not far from Berkeley, and my parents live in PA. They tell me they very rarely see a Prius around the Philadelphia area. Around where I live, it is one of the 2 or 3 most popular cars. Honda CRV is the only other model of car I can think of that I see a ton of around here besides Prius. When we take our dog for a walk, we pass over a dozen Prii in a couple blocks. Most are the standard Prius. Not counting our own Prius v, there is one Prius v and one Prius c and the rest of the dozen+ are the regular Prius.

I wonder what the Prius sales are broken down by state? I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of U.S. Prius sales are to CA, and a huge majority of Prius v sales are to CA. If that is the case, it would make sense to sell Prius v into CA only, especially if they're going to keep selling it in other countries.

National Average was never $4.00/ga sorry. U.S. Gasoline and Diesel Retail Prices California has higher per gallon taxes than ANY other state and has for many years. The ratio is even more unbalanced now than ever between the high gas taxes in this state compared to anywhere else. Proven fact.

CARB standards only equate to an extra 10 cents tacked on per gallon. Why are California’s Gasoline Prices So High? – Energy Institute Blog . It really boils down to the state "leadership" imposing more and more tax that keeps shooting the price up, not CARB.

haha yes, maybe a small colony of ants gets displaced in the congo as well. They will use any excuse, around the globe to raise our gas prices.

When we talk gaso prices, we need to try to normalize for differences, subtract out state tax, but also reformulated gasoline maybe 50% of us use ("RBOB") is another +20-30 cents per gallon. For example I think PA has now exceeds CA state taxes, but most of PA is not reformulated gasoline ("CBOB"), so on average PA is lower.

Until a few years ago, I think CA was about the same price as everyone else after correcting. Don't forget CA added a hidden carbon tax to the oil companies, because CA wanted to make that tax invisible. So the effective tax in CA may be higher than we see at the pump, which is also against the law to show state/local taxes at the pump, but at least we can look that up on API.

Depending on your location, it is likely that thing called winter cold temperatures.
Since we do not know where in the US you are located, we cannot guess much closer.

Colder weather could be the culprit. Heating is eggspensive (think Vincent Price in the Batman series). Another thing to watch is that the higher ranges are usually accomplish on flat ground at lower speeds than on the freeway. As for hills, our MGs work better as motors than as generators, so downhill payback isn't as great as the uphill penalty. In hybrid mode it is very near 100%. (EG: Lower Sandy Eggo to Temecula, higher on the return. Average comes out like a flatlander)

If I had been willing to wait after already being on the road for 9+ hours, I could have saved 20 cents a gallon at the Delaware rest stop vs my local prices.

Philly was a hot spot for the gen2 and gen3 Prius. Still seeing plenty of them on the road.

To bring a car to just California, a car company has to make all the same changes and pay the same costs to comply with American regulations as they would in bringing the car to the entire country. The Prius v was selling less than a 1000 per month this year. The plug in break out for California has about 60% of national sales. If that is true for the v, then Toyota would be spending a lot of money to just sell 7200 cars in the year that aren't getting any other special considerations like a plug in or FCEV.

The EIA survey calls 800 stations once a week on Monday. It could easily miss a weekend spike.

GasBuddy has far more surveyed data points, and they had the national average over $4 a gallon in 2008, which is what I was paying in Pennsylvania at the time, which was before our fuel taxes went up.

Adjust for inflation, and it was $4.66 back then. Gas Price History Graph (historic prices)

Except for maybe a hidden carbon tax, California state gas taxes are 58.3 cents all in, and it might not even be in the top five states for highest gas tax. How much you'll REALLY pay in gasoline tax in California (Hint: It's probably more than you think) - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Pennsylvania's gas tax is at 58.2 cents now, and it might be subject to our 6% sales tax on top of that.

Ca gas prices are at $3.183, and Pa at $2.766. AAA Gas Prices

If the CARB requirements just adds 10 cents, then your hidden taxes and costs are 32 cents, which does not seem likely.

Either way, even Ca's high gas prices are still a dollar or more per gallon lower than much of the first world, which makes them cheap when supporting high efficiency vehicles.

Unequivocally false. California pays the highest amount for gas in the nation, always has, always will. My previous links that prove it still stand. Your "gas buddy" link shows national average in 2017 at $2.58, we're paying almost $1 more in California, most of which is tax. Sorry. #debunked

Normally the addon for reformulated gasoline is quoted as +20-30 cents/gallon.
So that should help explain why CA is higher than PA, even though PA has increased tax to CA range.
