Brian1954, yes the inexpensive OBD2 scanner was a waste of $20 and will be returned. The code it gave was bogus. It turns out the 12V battery was dead. When the dealer replaced it, apparently, it fried an already failing Combination Meter (I read about the symptoms of failing capacitors in the Combination Meter here on PriusChat) . Now they say I need to replace the computer. We have no choice now but to make a repair that we've been putting off for a couple of years. It's hard to put $1400 into a ratty looking cluncker of a car, but hopefully now we will have more reliable transportation.

Thanks to all for helping with much valuable input.

Well I'm sorry you have to resort to having your ratty car sitting at a dealer It needs to be at a private garage or you can work with somebody because the combination meter repair that's all over the place that can be near nothing I don't know what you're going to pay for combination meter at the dealer I don't know if they'll get one from a junk car or one in the back of water You have to buy a whole new one oh my God but yeah there's always that

So, P1121 is a common fault code on a Gen2 Prius. It almost always is a faulty "3-way" coolant control valve. Many cheap aftermarket valves still cause the code. The thing is that this code won't really affect the car's operation.

Having a bad capacitor on the Combination Meter circuit board is another common fault. That prevents the CM from coming on and can prevent the power switch from working correctly. Replacing the 12V battery can make the symptom worse (more frequent).

There is a company that can take your CM and repair it. Or you can buy a repaired CM as an exchange. You (or your mechanic) would have to remove the old one. Much less $$ than new.

That said, neither of these problems would cause the original complaint with the RToD and not going into drive. You should have a capable scantool to check all systems for codes when the fault occurs.

Here is a thread that reviews several scantool apps and devices for smartphones. (the Autel AP200 is a good choice).
