Prius sound proofing

Sorry to hear that...I may have to reconsider the Primacies.

 

I'm wondering about undercoating. I had a Honda Accord once that it really made a difference.

Has anyone had a Prius undercoated?

 

I did this 1 1/2 years ago and it did help but it was really too much work for the end result:

BTW, I finally got a set of Michelin Primacies on the front and that made a big difference in sound dampening too.

 

I am looking at reviews for a product that is 80 mil (5/64 ") and weighs around 22 lbs. It is self adhesive and much more value than Dynamat ($146) at $110 for 50 SQ FT. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether that is enough to do floors, doors and firewall in a priusV?

Before soundproofing a 2010 Prius,took sound readings at 40 mph on a rough road. 103 decibels. I than used B Quiet ultimate (62 sf @ $195 ).Frost King (5 roles @ $90 ) and V Comp ( 13.5 sf @$80 ). Used all 3 on the floor ,trunk area and up the fire wall ( inside) .Didn`t take out the dash. Sound readings 40 mph . 75 decibels.
Did both the inner and outer door panels of front doors with B Quiet and Frost King and just the inner panel of rear door. Didn`t make any difference with road noise , 75 decibels.But the speakers sound was much improved.
Didn`t seam to change the mpg.

Before doing all that DynaMat stuff, take out the spare tire and the block of foam it rests on. Wrap that styrofoam in some cheap felt or other fabric. This will reduce squeaking in the hatch area considerably. No tools and less than $1.00 in scrap fabric.

 

I had the same result with Dynamat but I also did the wheel wells too. By removing the front wheel well panels near the firewall, I jammed allot of foam rubber in the cavity which helped some more. I think the biggest benefit would be doing the firewall completely (no easy way to do it though). Also, if there was a way to cushion the suspension bolts and struts from the body, most of the road noise transmitted that way would save on interior "road roar" at higher speeds. I recently purchased a set of Michelin Primacys, again for a more quiet ride.

Like you, I found the OEM speakers were now awesome once the doors were lined with Dynamat.

 

Bose quiet headphones have some sort of active noise cancelling technology. It would be great if Toyota could come up with something that would cancel some of the drone of road noise, and not add any weight to the car. Seems this would be very possible, and much cheaper than sound-deadening the whole car.

 

Hi guys just a thought... How 'bout lining the firewall area behind the wiper/cowling(s)? I saw this on a thread when installing front strut brace which exposes a bare panel/area just under the windshield. Got BQuiet Ultimate which is rated for under hood application so I thought I would give it a try since this will isolate the cabin right? Also took down the hood pad and will put some deadener there too. I would appreciate some insights, thanks!

 

If you can figure out how to get into that very tight space between the firewall and the engine to add a deadener, I'd be interested. I don't think there's too much engine/road noise transfer just under the windshield wiper cowl though.

 

Thanks for your prompt reply phoenixgreg! My idea there was to provide a bit more isolation from the engine 'cos I've read about "separating" the firewall more from the cabin helps, though it's fairly quiet already I think. Can't seem to find a thread yet on where IN the cabin/firewall itself I can place some deadener which I'd like to do as well. I know the floor is one so I gotta find out how to peel back the carpeting just enough to squeeze in the deadener.
I will concentrate also on the wheel wells to better deaden road/tire noise so I got me some brush on undercoating too.

I may have come across sometime in the past but can't really recall, that you can induce "white noise" in the cabin to cancel off audible noise so maybe there's a CD you can play if the radio's off but I'm just guessing here

Do you have pics with the wheel well liners off? I've looked at the wells and there's a fair amount of rubber undercoating there but I guess I'll have to brush on a couple more layers (to make it 1/4" as I've read on the undercoating label) for best results.

I had to really cram that foam-rubber in the cavities. I put emphasis on the areas closest to the firewall. I did notice a difference, but it is subtle.

 

Great. I want to research on how luxury cars get their treatment of sound deadening to pinpoint the areas that need more of what and where and how much. I've learned that to be effective, the product should be at least 1/4" thick. The areas you did are what I will do next. I will apply this along with my B-quiets.

I'm doing it on mine once i get warm weather for a least two, maybe three days in a row to facilitate drying. I did this to a friend's '03 civic and the difference is phenomenal! This is considering I hadn't done the whole underside, just the wheel wells (thicker coat on the back side of the wells) and rocker panels. For best results it's recommended that the thickness is 1/4" to the wells closer to the engine tapering to 1/8".

 

Yes, I did all of that and it did help some, but I'm convinced that allot of road noise at higher speeds comes thru the engine firewall and thru the struts where the top bolt is mounted to the body.

 

hi Kenroberts45. few questions please... how where you able to peel of the carpet and the lining off? and for the firewall, what did you notice about the engine noise running at idle? i have this theory referring to phoenixgreg's pics that that big piece of metal which is the frame/chassis which comes across to the floor area is where the engine noise is coming from so maybe put more undercoating there you think?

i've been driving with the radio off just to get a "feel" of where the noise is coming from and it's defintely by the wheel wells. please let me know what you think.

If I remember correctly, I got all of it at Walmart near their pillows and bedding area. They have a pretty good selection of foam rubber. I just cut it to fit and jammed it in there as far as I could. I did seem to help with wheel well noise.
