Thanks Jimbo, It would be a 500lb Heavy Duty Carrier Loading Ramp for Mobility Scooters or Electric Power Wheelchair and I would take it off in the winter, it's just for my wife, she has MS and really needs to take the chair with her especially in the Spring,Summer and beginning of the Fall, I would appreciate any help!

Thanks so much, it's kind of what I thought, the chair is 250 and the least I could find was 400 lbs for the lift, I am trying to think of some way, she really needs to get out again and go see our granddaughter and feel free when she takes her for ice cream she can just drive along with her - means the world to her. So I'm gonna figure something out.

I think what you are really saying is that you want to MOUNT the ramp to a hitch on the back of the car.......right ??
"towing" implies that the thing attached to the hitch has it's own wheels on the ground and it doesn't sound like that's what you have.

You probably could get away with an actual small trailer and a class 1 hitch but then there is the problem of finding parking spaces big enough and the difficulty of backing up.

Class 1 hitch is rated at 2000 lbs towing.
And 200 lbs on the tongue.

Class 3 is rated at 600 lbs on the tongue.

:eek:I think anything over 300 lbs is too much tongue weight for the uni-weld undercarriage of the Prius.
    I could be wrong!!

I have not seen a wheelchair ramp set-up on a Prius; yet.
Has anybody had a tongue weight higher than 300 lbs on the Prius?:)

I towed 4000 pounds with my prius and 40' trailers with no problems. The trailer also slanted down so I would say over 400 pound tongue weight.

It was time for some new tires for my Prius. Discount Tire did not have 195-65-15R Michelin energy saver A/S in stock; so I thought I would go with a wider tire for better traction pulling my RV, so I got Yokohama YK580 205-65-15R fuel efficient tires; in stock.
    BIG mistake!!:(
Without pulling my RV; my MPG went from 51+ to 46 MPG:(; 5+ points down. I was thinking maybe 2 points, but not 5+ points. So I'm ordering my Michelin energy saver A/S 195- 65-15R, weight is 16 LBS per tire; while the Yokohama weights 21 LBS per tire. Discount Tire said that they will take the Yokohama tires back:).

Every bit of contact with the ground adds friction.

I think it's a mistake to pull a trailer with the Prius. I fear for the drive-train whenever I put the pedal to the floor.

Just to clarify the 40' trailer you see is not the 4k pound trailer. The 4k pound trailer was smaller with a boat on it.

Thanks to Member AAA for helping me get these pics on here.

Hello all! I've read through all the posts on this thread to catch up. Lots of great info. We own a 2013 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) nd I'm ordering the torklift ecohitch 2" to put on. Initially, I just want to be able to use a 4-bike hitch rack to haul the family bikes to the trailheads. Reading this thread has me thinking of some light trailering later on...

I was considering purchasing the riderite air adjustable suspension bags to pump the rear end up for a long upcoming trip (500miles). Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is necessary for hitch racks? The rack is 30lbs, plus a max of 4 bikes @30lbs (conservative, since 2 are kids) = 150lbs or so of tongue weight. I'm just wondering if I should be worried about that much compression on the rear for an extended drive or if it should be no big deal? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/help.

If you have a class 1 hitch, your good up to 200 lbs tongue weight.
If you are just going to use it for a bike rack;once a while, with no towing, I would not buy the air bags.
But if you plan on using the bike rack all the time; then I would buy the air bags.
The air bags will make a better, smoother ride.:)
