    You will probably do better than $18k. I sold my 17 Prime Premium for $21k with 15k miles on Jan 1. Use KBB instant buy if it's available in your area.

    Yes, as long you have enough tax liability at the end of the year. Prime trade in price in your area may be lower since the rebates are so high in that area.

    MSRP: $35,274 (included body side molding and premium carpet mats)
    Incentives: None (outside the federal $4500 and state of Texas $2500)
    Selling Price: $33,800 (included window tint, door side moldings, paint protection, cargo mats for "free")
    Out the door: $36,500
    Location: Dallas, TX (Toyota of Dallas)

    Supposedly the 1st 2019 in the Gulf States area. A few additional thoughts:

    • The dealer also added on window tint, door side molding, "paint protection" (called Zaktek), and cargo mats. They added on an additional $795 to the price for all that, and said they do these options on all cars they sell from their dealership, and it wasn't optional. Had to take it. We said "no, that's not what we asked for, and you never mentioned it. Not paying for it". So- they gave it all to us without an extra charge (seeing as they had already done it to the car anyway, this is just extra profit to them for anyone that agrees to pay for it).
    • They didn't "ask" if we wanted an extended warranty or...some other optional package. Came back with the offer sheet, and said "ok...heres what we have for you", with extended warranty and "options" package line itemed out in offer sheet. The extended warranty was, I think, $2700 and the optional package was another $2000. We said "no thanks" to both. We got a 2003 Avalon with 206k miles on it- never anything wrong with it, so...personally, don't see the need for an extended warranty. Plus- I work in the database marketing space. DMV records are public knowledge, and data brokers mine that data, and will be sending you extended warranty offers when your 3 years from purchase is almost up. Those offers will be way less than the $2700 the dealer wanted to charge. Now granted...you have to be careful about which company you choose, but...it'll be way less.
    • Even though we weren't financing, they put a piece of paper in front of us and said "need you to fill out this info also". It was a credit app, which asked for social security number. Said I wasn't giving my social to them, and they said it was needed since I was paying by personal check. They needed to know they could trust the check. Uhhh...knowing my credit score does nothing to prove to you that you can trust the check. Plus, they call in the checking account to an "auto check" service that verifies the funds exist anyway, so...a totally bs reason for why they wanted me to fill out a credit app.
    • In the "Gulf States" area, there really isn't any additional Toyota rebates. We get the federal $4500 (assuming it'll still be available and the "rules" don't change mid year), and we get $2500 from the State of Texas (capped at 1st 2000 submissions, which...they are at about 1500 now, sooo...I gotta get busy!!)
    • Toyota of Dallas was really the only dealership that consistently went the extra mile in terms of trying to find us what we wanted.
    Still busy reading through the 800 page user manual :) Have had it for 2 days, and so far...wife, kid and I enjoying the purchase.

    On 12-23-18 I learned that I could by a NEW never titled Prime Advanced - MSRP: $33,750, after TOYOTA Rebate $5,000, Dealer “rebate probably more Toyota cash) $4,000, $2000 more for my 2010 Prius 4 than wholesale - not counting the Fed Tax Credit Of $4,200.


    My 2010 had 176k miles and was fine. 3 week old Michelin Defenders on it.



    The day after Christmas I drove 973 miles nonstop to trade my car and drive away. There is a noticeable learning curve on the Prime.


    To me the material reduction in storage area in the back is a questionable design choice but that is a buyers decision. To deliver ANY car without even space to store a spare. Tire shows how out of touch Toyota is becoming. I bought another exact wheel, fit a Michelin tire to it and will place it behind the front passenger seat when traveling out of town. Silly design decision.

    So I hate to ask this but I can't really find a straight answer via the search.

    Is there anything I should be aware of if I'm buying a car from MA and having it shipped to CA? I don't want to get double taxed or anything..

    I liked the 2018 prius prime I bought in California so much I'm considering getting a second one - working with a dealership in MA atm. to potentially secure a second one. But I'm just a bit wary.

    Based off what I'm reading & understanding, as long as I can get the car shipped from MA -> CA I should be set? No taxation or anything..

    this is how it works around here, PA NJ NY DE VA etc...double check on west coast to be sure.
    no extra taxes per se, you are required to pay sales tax in your home state, so either the selling dealer will collect the correct tax for your home state and take care of title and registration in your home state, or they will collect sales tax for the state of sale which will be prorated towards sales tax in your home state. only issue could be if you paid 6% in PA but sales tax in CA is 7.5% you would owe the additional 1.5% to CA.
    theres not any extra taxes in CA over and above sales tax is there? like luxury tax for example...prius doesnt get hit with luxury tax.
    you should not have to pay for registration twice, or title service twice.
    see if anyone has bought a car out of state and brought it into cali, tehy could detail the process.
    i'm sure if you search around for threads on this topic, here, or on any site really, there will be good answers. buying any car, from anywhere and bringing it to cali would be pretty much the same as what you are doing. i'm sure you are not the first guy to do it.

    MA does not issue temporary plates so you might have to get temporary or actual plates from CA first before they can ship it.

    might be possible to arrange with your local dealer to act as intermediary and be able to claim the cali $1500?
    they just receive the car shipped from MA and do the paperwork in cali, honoring the price the MA dealer quoted.
    might be difficult to get them to be interested, but maybe you are a preferred customer of theirs, etc.
    you DID just buy a full price PRIME from your dealer in cali... if the numbers add up, go for it.

    Any data on 2019 prices? We're all out of 2018 inventory on the west coast. :p

    A dealer in the bay area quoted $34,000 for a 2019 Prime Advanced with no options -> roughly $37,500 OTD. (Note that MSRP for the base model is 33,350). I'm guessing now is a bad time to buy b/c the 2019 just came out - even if it's a carryover.

    I'm brand new here.

    Am currently shopping around for a new 2018 Prime. In talking price (or emailing, rather) I have found that none of the dealers mention the $4502 federal tax credit, they never bring it up at all. It seems to me it would be in their own interest to do so, since they could point out that by the time the customer files his 2019 tax return and gets the credit, the car he bought (in February 2019, if I get one) really cost $4502 less than what he finally paid for it, a huge savings.

    (In fact, that tax credit along with incentives is the only reason we're thinking of buying a car now, rather than trying to eke out another year out of our second car, a beloved 2002 Toyota Echo with 210,000 miles on it.)

    Why don't they mention it? It does make me feel a little fishy; is my research correct that the credit is still in effect for the Prime, that $4502 is the correct amount for a 2018, and that there is no current threat of a phaseout for Toyota and even if there was that wouldn't effect a purchase now?

    So: a) Can I count on that credit and b) I'd be interested in any insight as to why they don't bring it up?

    Thanks, and maybe in a day or two I'll be qualified to ask all kinds of technical Prime questions!
