on the new one, you should be able to get it around 29k before ttl, and then another $4,500. fed tax credit if you qualify, and any nj incentives

for the used one, if it is advanced, i wouldn't pay more than 21k depending on condition and mileage, unless you don't qualify for the fed tax credit

Thanks. I’m really not sure if they may have 2 red cars or just the one demo. There are more cars available in the NJ dealer than PA. They are about 7 mikes from my house either way. I’m not sure if I qualify for the tax credit. It’s a bit complex for my brain. I did get one on the 2006.

when you have completed your federal tax return, if your total tax is $4500. or more, you qualify. if it is between 0 and 4500, you qualify for that amount.
it isn't really complicated, but you have to separate out what is meant by 'owed', 'paid', and 'total liability'.
owed and paid mean nothing really, for this purpose.

    is new york too far?

I went with a Prius Prime Advanced because it had the technology most close to the Tesla Model 3 (which I was considering) and cost a minimum of $30k less.

I narrowed dealerships down to Hoffman Toyota in CT (rebate was $3,500) or CarMax Laurel Toyota in MD. I ended up going with CarMax because I was able to trade in my 2013 Prius Persona in Atlanta and pick up my new car in Maryland. In addition the dealer fee was very low at CarMax eating up less of the rebate. The sales representative at CarMax, Steve Yang, was awesome! The deal they presented was the deal that I got when I arrived in MD - they were extremely easy to do business with as an out of state customer.

    - Model/color: Advanced / Blizzard Pearl
    - MSRP (this is sticker price): $34,614.00
    - Incentives (specify if Toyota rebate or dealer markdown): $2,500 manufacturer incentive from Toyota
    - Selling price before TTL: $33,858.00
    - Out the door price (after TTL/fees, specify tax %): Dealer fees: $118.00 / Tax $7% paid in Georgia outside of transaction was $1521.32 but added here for accuracy / Rebate applied of $2500.00 OTD - $32,997.32 excluding trade. With tax credit of $4502 drive out is $28,495.32
    - CarMax Toyota Laurel in Laurel, MD with Steve Yang
    - Financing: Through Georgia based Credit Union at 3.95%
    - Date of Sale: October 22, 2018

I just bought one in late December in MD. Dealer offered me 2900 off MSRP plus 4K Toyota rebate. Seems like I should’ve waited and driven to NY to get 5000 rebate. In addition to the fed credit, md also gives 880 dollars state tax credit so It was an awesome deal. Unbelievable discounts for this car. I never thought I’d own a Prius but after seeing the slick deals post it was too good to pass up. I did all of my negotiating over the internet and the phone and I didn’t step foot in the dealership except to do the transaction paperwork.

For the prime premium, I would say a big dealer can probably offer 3k or more off MSRP, plus the Toyota rebate. Do not let the dealer tell you that since the Toyota rebate is 4-5k they can’t discount the car, that’s a compete lie. Make sure you factor in any processing or doc fees as those are pure profit to the dealer. There are going to be some incredible deals to be had if you can go get the Prime from a northeast dealer, to Toyota is basically liquidating the inventory.

While shopping in Chicagoland recently, the used 2017 and 2018 Prius prime advanced vehicles were about 28,000, with very little discounting (less than $1000). When I calculated the $4000 rebate in NY on the new vehicle and the federal tax credit, the used vehicles were more expensive by $1000-$2000. That assumes you would qualify for the full tax credit. It was a no-brainer for me. Great success on your search!

I thought the federal rebate was $4500 not $3500?

I am not the OP, but I imagine it was Jim Coleman Toyota in Bethesda, they are a high-volume Prius dealer. I got my Prime Premium in Nov 2016 from Joel Vengo. He was super easy to work with. You could fly into IAD, DCA, or BWI. But check out NY and New England if you're going cross-country, they may come in cheaper. See Reddie's recent posts on inventory/incentives.

This is true in every state except California where we have a Northern CA and Southern CA region.

Rebates I have seen on the Prime over the years are usually $0-1000 difference intrastate on any given month, usually a smaller difference than can be had compared to some Northeast states.

I'm helping my brother-in-law on buying a Prius Prime Advanced from a dealer in NJ (we live in NC). Looking at the bill-of-sale, I noticed they are charging tax and registration fee. Do we pay NJ state tax or do we just buy the car at face value and pay NC tax when we bring it back home?

Sorry for asking this. I really don't know much about this.

It may vary by state, but usually they charge you your home (=NC) tax and send it separately to you local DMV or whatever its called there.

I never purchased out of state, but my understanding is that sales tax is paid to the state where it is first registered. as you stated.

Excellent! Just talked to the sales guy. He added NJ tax and registration instead of NC. He will revise the bill-of-sale and sending us a new one.

Anything you buy from out of state is taxable in your state at least Indiana wants you to claim sales tax on out of state purchases. Is this true in other states and countries.

I am looking to buy a Prius Prime Premium. I live in NJ. The NJ dealers I have contacted appear to be discounting just a few hundred dollars off MSRP. (Other than the factory incentive.) Can anyone suggest a dealer in nearby state that I should contact? NY? CT? MA? Maryland? PA? Thanks for your advice.
