Had a slight drop going from a 2016 Camry to a 2022 Outback. Guessing the insurance companies figured the new safety features actually help.

Thanks, Will. Interesting info and congrats on your new ride. I know that this is a different thread, but it seems to me that people who get their PP are the ones with higher trims, while the base SE will have to wait some more. Which kind of makes sense for Toyota since they make more money off of those, but still a bit annoying for the rest of us.

Yeah, I’m gonna definitely have to call and ask them about the new safety rating. The online quote is showing my prime XSE is going to be more than my 2022 WRX sports car (which is one of the top ticketed cars that exists). And I qualify for every discount, clean record, multi vehicle, homeowner, everything. Lol.

It is my belief that insurance is a black art.

There is no reasoning to the madness! And when you ask for an explanation, they never seem to have an explanation. I have never had my rates go down! They always go up every renewal, yet I never make a claim. Funny how that works.

Hang there Bobo99, your day will come! I only got mine fast as it was a "reject" from someone who had ordered it and chickened out. Otherwise I was being told 6-18 months. There is a lot to like about the SE and suspect I'll be second-guessing myself for a while if I make the right choice, but for the 90% of the car that is the same, it is a cool car either way.

I am not risk adverse and always get the minimum coverage required by law. Having said that, total value determines insurance cost, but I got a quote from Liberty Mutual for my 23 XLE at $1700+/- and from Progressive for the same coverage at $1000+/-. That's for a 12 month policy. Guess which one I went with?

This is another valid and very good point. Different companies do to charge vastly different rates as seen above. It does pay to shop around.

Granted I’ve been with USAA for almost 25 years and have not switched yet. I’d say they are roughly average priced to slightly above average for rates. Def not the cheapest, but you must take into account customer service and will they be there when you need them. I’m gonna call them tomorrow and see what they say about the Gen 5’s updated safety awards and if that makes a difference at all on my premiums.

    Really, really, really bad idea.

On the contrary, most people need near maximums on their coverage. Examples: hit-and-runs, which are very common these days, that you could end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation vs. none because you were too cheap to include uninsured-motorist coverage or a serious injury you caused that could lead to you losing all your money, your house, etc.

Our state min. is 15K/30K BI and 5K property damage. Anything you hit will be more than 5K of damage. ie. a Tesla, BMW, or MB.

FYI, the last two people who hit me was uninsured..... Drives up everyone's cost. Our state should move to no-fault insurance - If you don't buy insurance, you get NOTHING.

I ended up paying my deductible, even though it was the uninsured drivers' fault those last two times.

It sounds like you didn't have collision-deductible-waiver coverage. Note that that coverage only works if the uninsured driver is identifiable and completely at fault. It does not work in hit-and-runs because the insurance companies don't want the drivers to cheat the system by claiming a hit-and-run when there isn't one.

One was a hit & run. I got his plates and a good look at him. Cops found the car hidden in his garage and sent me a picture array to verify which one was the owner. I'm assuming the insurance company went after him, since he had assets.

I don't pay collision deductible waiver, because if it's my fault - it hurts a little. Self loathing and reminds me to pay better attention on the road. I didn't think I'd have to use it to cover an uninsured motorist - What's this world coming to????

Collision-deductible-waiver coverage costs next to nothing, and it is only for waiving the collision deductible in case of an identified and fully at-fault uninsured motorist and nothing else.

Uninsured/underinsured-motorist coverage is the most important type of car insurance in California these days, as most accidents seem to be hit-and-runs. Hit-and-run or not, you are most likely to be hit by someone with the state-minimum coverage (in other words, underinsured for all practical purposes) or no insurance at all, as these are the riskiest drivers.

I recently voluntarily chose to add even more coverage to my already top tier policy to include a 1 Mill Umbrella Policy covering my family. I figured as Gokhan mentioned above the last thing I want is to lose any assets that I worked my whole life for. I also added extra coverage on my motorcycle policy.

My Daughter is a new driver in the household with a learners permit and is starting driving lessons so figured better safe than sorry. I also changed to full tort (In Pa you can chose full or Limited Tort but costs $$ to go full). There’s no raise in rates adding my daughter with her learners permit until she gets her actual drivers license in 6 months. I’ve been told to expect a monstrous bump in rates at that point.. $$$ o_O

Oh, and here’s a friendly pointer. If you do have kids on your policy that are newer drivers, make sure you have them added as a driver on the cheapest vehicle you own. I’ve been told by my agent that makes a significant difference. Also, you get a discount for good grades (3.0+ gpa and drivers training classes).

Uninsured/underinsured-motorist coverage is required in Oregon.

In our state, it only covers $3500 in property damage - that might pay for a Yugo or e-bike.:whistle::unsure: You have to depend on the rest of your auto policy for any excess and you can't get blood out of a turnip.

I did ask my insurance provider the other day when I picked up my Prime about the new “top safety rating” and if it would lower my rate at all.

I was told that is not what they go off of. They go off of how many collisions have been occurring with that vehicle in question and how expensive the vehicle is to fix, and I’m sure there are many other factors.

Athough he did mention that every once in a while, I guess they recheck everything and rates could change, potentially for the better. But like I said, in a past post, I’ve never seen my rates go down, even with never making a claim. Lol. I guess it is possible with a brand newly released car and knowing for the most part how, safe Prius drivers are.

I assume that this question refers to "full coverage" insurance.......since a policy without "collision" coverage
likely would have much less of an increase.

I agree, rates never go down unless you shop around. I once moved to another insurer for better rates, then the original insurer offered a rate that was better than the one I've been getting from them all along - just to keep me as a client. It's a messy, opaque industry. Their argument for premiums always going up is that, even though you drive carefully yourself, others in your location don't and that drives up the rates for everyone. A pile of crock, of course.

In what newly released cars are concerned, it's true that they may not have much data to go by, so they play it "safe" and set the initial rates high to cover themselves - then rates only go up from there, because well, that's the trend. As one of my former bosses used to say "don't look for sanity in the nuthouse".
