While this is good general advice is making any car purchase, you have to understand everyone's situation is different. Some may have immediate reasons to address, some may be trying to cash in on certain state incentives while available.

Indeed though, if you have time.... let it pass while these salesmen with dollars signs in their eyes come back down to Earth.

Have you guys seen how FAST the nuts drive in those HOV lanes in southern California? Better get used to driving your Prius at 85 mph... Or get out of that lane!

How about an aluminum Ford pickup??? ;)

I'm still kicking myself for not waiting a few months longer, before I bought my 2016. Could have saved a couple more thousand dollars, but what the heck, I spend that much on pizza anyway!

No first year car is trouble free, and those issues can extend into the second year. An older(late '90s) CR article on first year new model/redesign issues held the gen2 Rav4 up as an example of just how badly any manufacturer can have it with such issues.

The real issue with that is an aluminum body on a Ford only got it down to a GM steel truck weight.

The Prius, CT and other hybrids drive like fiends here. Faster than most other cars.

Every day, Gen2 and Gen3 guys BLOW BY ME like I'm standing still! And I'm usually over in the far right lane, with all the slowpokes, doing 75 mph. :)

But those HOV lanes are crazy! I guess people think there is no speed limit in those lanes.

Well, it doesn't help when when Toyota keeps using the crappy Takata airbags! And even the replacement Takata airbags were found to be bad in the Nissans.

How long has Toyota been building the Prius, 17 years now? Granted, the 2016 has many changes, but you would think they would have all the bugs out of it even if it's a new model.

Wait... What speed limit? You mean that number sign with the mere suggestion of what your Speedo should read? ;)

Thanks, Prodigy. Good article. This really makes me angry:

"The automakers and Takata have been hit with class-action lawsuits from owners, and Takata is the subject of a Justice Department criminal investigation.

The report by the top Democrat on the committee that oversees the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the latest to raise concerns about the massive recall of close to 70 million U.S. air bag inflators and nearly 100 million worldwide.

"This may be the first time in history where multiple automakers are selling brand new cars with a known, and potentially deadly, defect," said Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book."
    ===

The bottom line is, the almighty buck. Auto companies are only concerned about the bottom line, and that is making money. They knowingly are selling us a dangerous and defective car.

Time and climate is would leads to the degradation of the propellant. A new bad one is better than an old bad one.

A redesign is a different car from the previous generation, with new parts being made by suppliers for the first time. The Japanese intro was delayed because the carbon fiber hatch production didn't come up to speed as fast as expected. It is also the first time the employees are putting these new parts together.

Then there is the possibility of a design defect; like the Prius parking brake cable needing those clips. Or something happening out in the field that wasn't foreseen; cleaner fluid getting into Honda window switches causing shorts and fires.

"Japanese automaker Toyota (TM) said Wednesday it's recalling another 5.8 million vehicles around the globe because of Takata's exploding airbags. That brings the total number of vehicles Toyota has called back since the start of the Takata (TKTDY) scandal to 23.1 million."

Toyota's recall over risky Takata airbags rises above 23 million cars - Oct. 26, 2016

I got my recall yesterday. And I'm sure some previous Prius models must be using the same airbag made by Takata.

    Yes, I have a Prius. :D

    Recalled.

    Takata airbag.

"The crisis has resulted in a massive global recall of tens of millions of vehicles made by companies like Honda (HMC), General Motors (GM) and Volkswagen (VLKAF) Toyota, Nissan.
Takata, meanwhile, is seeking financial support as it struggles with the mounting financial burden."

I think it's criminal. They should be put out of business. But in the meantime, they are asking for donations…

And now you can add 2016 Prius to that list. But what I don't understand, is why Toyota continues to use defective airbags and/or airbag parts.

Apparently, Takata is the only supplier of airbags for Toyota, according to all the articles I read.

    Acura
    Lexus
    Ford

The list goes on and on. Would it be fair to assume, that all Toyota models have defective airbags? If Takata is the supplier for all Toyotas, it would make sense that they may be all defective. I think Toyota waits until there is an accidental discharge, or an accident and injury, before they issue a recall? I sure hope that is not the case!

All these auto dealers better start hiring many more mechanics, and assign them to do nothing but replace airbags.
