Point taken, but the changes b/w the generations of prius a huge compared to the more incremental changes in the Mustange line and it's quite a bit easier to group them by generation for a starting place of discussion. Since a new generation evolved only every 4-7 years I don't think it'll be too tough.

Look, I think the mavens are fine with just a year tag, but the casual priuschatter is going to relate to discussion when grouped by generation. But clearly not every discussion will require the tag.

It's a biosynthetic leather--and it's quite nice, not slippery like real leather can be, soft, but feels like leather.

The key word is synthetic, that is not real leather. I wonder if anything had to die to make the fake leather?

Sounding like plants died to make these seat covers but I am just barely starting on the research :)

Toyota is calling it SofTex upholstery (a leather-like upholstery as durable as cloth, Toyota says), I haven't been able to find much with Google so far.

"softex is people" (sorry, couldn't resist using the famous line from "soylent green") :)

This is the best I can get, so far, on the SofTex product:

Clearly that's more marketing stuff than it is technical, but so far that's all the info available.

That's still good info ;) I would be interested in seeing a sample of that material in my hand to judge. I wonder if Car-Leather.com will be offering that material with their covers? They sent me samples of the available materials for the Toyota seats. I was impressed :) Definitely an alternative to expensive factory seating options, minus the power adjustable features of course.

Back to the naming, I like PIP.
But I will have to change my license plate holder- it says:
No, I DO NOT PLUG IT IN
    PRIUSCHAT.com on the bottom.

Ok Danny can you get one that says- YES I DO PLUG it IN!

Any comparison of SofTex to the regular fabric upholstery, technical or otherwise?

Yep, I like PiP too. :)

Haha about the license plate frame. I ought to get one of those. It's not quite as great (for married guys) as:
    "Driver carries no money.
    He's marrried."

If I do end up getting a Leaf as my 2nd car, I will consider license plate frame that reads "Prius is my gas guzzler."

"looks like leather", "easier to clean" would be top two i guess?

It reminded me of soft leather. Durable texture, pliable, not slick. I really liked it actually.

Perhaps I should have been more specific, as I was looking for comparison's along the lines of efusco's earlier post, ie. weight and manufacturing emissions vs fabric. Anyhow, the first isn't a comparison. As for the second, the fabric in the Gen II was doesn't stain easily and was very easy to clean. I assume they used similar quality fabric on the Gen III and it is entirely possible that leather/synthetic leather may actually may stain more easily.

Good to know; I hope I like it too. My general feeling of leather is that is that it is a downgrade. In addition to what I mentioned in my post earlier, there are coarse, exposed thread seams that collect dirt. If it is going to be synthetic, why constraint its quality by having to resemble something natural? Anyhow, I'm hoping SofTex is different enough from leather. I wish it was possible to get the Advanced without it or that it is sufficiently better than leather.
