Did you guys see the 15 launch states on the official page? Looks similar to what GM did...

I believe the 15 states were chosen because they are the top 15 states for per capita Prius sales.

EDIT I've just searched and that's not quite right, unless numbers have changed significantly since this post:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii.../87972-prii-per-capita-state.html#post1232426

    - Colorado is not a launch state.
    - DC is highly ranked, although there aren't any dealers there. The neighboring states are included though.
    - New Jersey, although ranked only 21 in the list (20 for states) is a launch state.

Still, the correlation isn't too bad.

I'd imagine when you select a dealer to have the car sent to you negotiate with that dealer the price paid for the new one as well as things like trade ins.

nope, thats who you are buying the car from, any trade as well as financing can be worked out with them. Toyota cannot sell cars directly.

As just mentioned, toyota cannot sell cars directly so you have to work everything out with the dealer including trades etc

The way I read it to work is you make the order online and choose a dealer to negotiate with and have it sent to. Toyota cannot sell the car directly to you.

In my opinion, I find the online ordering part useless if I must still negotiate with a dealer on price.

With Leaf it was very useful. Compare the prices one got on Volt vs Leaf - you know why online ordering is better than being on individual dealer's waiting list.

I guess I'll have to see it to believe it when I goto my dealer and negotiate. I understand if your chosen dealer doesn't want to negotiate and drop price a little you can just goto another dealer but I just don't believe many around here will care. I plan on stopping by my local dealer soon and seeing what they say considering my dad and I will be choosing them to have 2 sent to via the online ordering system...

Well, there were dealers who dropped price substantially (we are talking upto 5% of MSRP). Essentially, some dealers who weren't in areas that would have generated a lot of sale from nearby customers, undercut to get larger volume.

Don't know whether that will happen with PHV ...

Is there a way to negotiate in advance with a dealer with something in writing, or is it even possible?

According to this site, the estimated production of Prius PHV will start in Jan 2012. That's 5 months away!

The estimated delivery is Feb/Mar 2012, guessing that's in Japan. Shipping to US will probably take a month.

If I am reading this right, PHV orders will begin on November 10, 2011?

Yea, I think that's when the dealers place orders with Toyota? That means, the price and package details has to be released before November.

I'd expect it to be the same as the LEAF.

The key is that with online ordering the dealer doesn't hold the inventory so they can't use restricted supply to gouge. You're just a sale and they just have to decide what margin they're willing to cut to to get you as a customer.

It maybe wishful thinking on my part, but to me, priority pre-order means ordering online even before dealers can place orders.

More than likely the states choosen are mostly those that follow the California emission rules, New Jersey being one of them. The auto makers still need to get ZEV credits in these states.
