I know an after market Nav system is much better and cost less but OEM units look better in the vehicle.

I just wish the auto industry would do away with DVD based Navigation systems, they are prone to failures and then they charge to much for a replacement drive when it does fail.

With the current low cost of flash memory, it does make you wonder why they use DVDs.

I don't know whether this has been brought up already, but CNET's so-so review of the 2010 included the following quote: "Design also benefits from the nice graphic treatment for the navigation system." I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I wonder if the lower screen resolution is the reason Senior Member "accordingly" gets only 10 characters when playing XM radio. The high resolution screens in the 2006-2009 models display 16 characters of text per line when playing XM radio.

If I were in the market for a 2010 I would be disappointed to learn that the screen resolution is of a lower quality than my 2007. I hope Toyota's Marketing Department insists on the high definition upgrade for 2011.

I don't think resolution has anything to do w/ XM display. I also believe Accordingly was complaining about the non-NAV version. NAV versions appear to display ~16 chars.

Fifteen pages of debating the screen resolution but no one spoke about the cost to update the CD. I had an 03 Avalon through 09 with Nav. The salesman said I could update annually for $20 but it turned out to be $200 when I tried in 05. Dealer caved and gave it to me for $20, once. Then cost went up > $200 so when traded, it had an 05 CD. I hated the Nav system on the car so when I leased a CRV in 08, I bought a Nuvi. Updating also costs $ but they are getting so inexpensive that I will just buy a new one every 2 or 3 years. Since I am keeping the CRV for bus, portable is good!

I brought it up briefly at http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...m/64052-prius-deal-breaker-16.html#post900426.

Garmin now has a lifetime update program. It's $120 to update qualifying units for the life of the unit. See nMaps Lifetime?.

You are correct. Any character limitation is due to the XM unit itself and has nothing to do with the screen.

That's because I started this thread to talk mainly about the LCD Navigation screen resolution reduction. The cost of the Navigation DVD isn't a deal breaker for me, even though the cost does suck.
