What's with resale? I plan on driving my prius until the wheels fall off! Which if you listen to some of the comments will occur in 100k miles.

Yes, you have looked up the numbers and found that the Prius is cleaner and gets better mileage than the 118d. It is also larger and has more cargo room. Your point is? He likes his 118d better.

Different people value different things in vehicles. For example you keep going on about the BMW being a manual and the Prius a CVT. That is fine, but Europeans prefer manuals. Having an automatic is not considered an advantage in Europe. In fact, for a large part of the population that would be considered a disadvantage. Yes, the Prius is bigger but that also makes it harder to park. If you were like my family for example and only have 2 people to carry around where is the advantage of the larger car? If you value performance then the BMW wins flat out no question.

Each person has their own set of values and priorities when purchasing a car. They may not match yours. It seems strange to me that some people here just can't seem to see that some people might not find the Prius to be the best car in the world.

If you trade vehicle every 2 to 4 years like a large portion of the US population then resale is a big issue. If like you and I, you tend keep your cars for much longer, than resale doesn't matter. Resale has never factored into any of my vehicle purchases.

That is not the point I was making, but rather that the numbers were misrepresented by careful selection, rather than providng the apples to apples numbers, in his post. Also the fact that he eluded the 118 was basically the same size as the Prius.

Different strokes for different folks, but I'm just tired of folks not comparing apples to apples when trying to downplay the advantage the Prius' drivetrain gives it.

By your analysis the Honda Insight stick will definitely be the way to go, 2 people seating and limited cargo space with stick. Also much smaller and easier to park :D

I have advised friends away from a Prius as it doesn't suite their needs. The Prius is not the best car in the world fro everyone, but it is the best in what it tried to accomplish. Teh packaging also seems to align what most buyers seem to eb looking for as well.

will probably become a 2 Prius family in the next few months and have been looking at used Priuses and around here, i have pretty much decided that i will probably be getting a new 2008 (two month waiting list average here) checked used pricing and most are going for 90-95% of new car value and UP and most of these cars have 25k miles + on them!!

Although my Prius replaced a 17 year old car (neighbor still driving it) resale value was a factor in this purchase. I am tired of cars that plummet in value and looked for something different with high reliability and resale value.

Even though I am not getting the super high mileage that some of you get, I save $55 each time I fill up the Prius compared to the cost for gas to drive the same distance in my previous car.

Wow. You guys weren't kidding when you said that most of the posts in the OP link were moronic.

50% had absolutely nothing intelligent (or even funny) to say. Wankers. Nerfer and Ozyran made some intelligent comments at least.

Probably the same chance they are Democrats. There are a lot of stupid people in both parties.

I've wondered how many Prius owners are Republicans vs Democrats. You long-time PriusChatters, has there ever been a party poll? One would think that more Dems would own Prii, an anonymous poll might prove interesting!

I'm sure it was different at first, but the polls over the last showed it was getting close to even between liberal and conservative. I want to say 60-40, and I am too lazy to search for the latest one.

I found the poll. Roughly 36.5% Conservative and 56% Liberal, so you're pretty close! The way things are going we might be sliding more to Liberal. Lots of people I know who voted for Bush won't admit it now for some reason, and I can't engage them in political banter the way I used to. ;)
    Kinda got off topic here!

Glad to hear that the old memory still works somewhat. I wonder if those that are liberal have just gotten more vocal in their criticism. I don't really recall there being the little snipe attacks on non-FHOP or non-political threads. I think that a lot of the conservatives here have lost the willingness to take on all of it. I know I try to avoid FHOP, since I can't recall any issue in which either side changed their mind and it often gets ugly quick. Not to mention being very time-consuming!

There is a movement in some conservative circles to be more attune with environmental issues. There was some evidence of this as a within the last 3-6 months a prominent evangelical lobbyist spoke out for environmental issues to become more important to Christians. I couldn't find the story though. Of all the people I know, only two of us have a Prius, I am conservative and I am assuming the other is more liberal. So still a ways to go on both fronts.
