Good question... I have a CANUSB on order (partly for that reason, and partly because USB is a little easier to work with, but mostly because my laptop (and mac minis, which is the eventual goal) don't have PC COM ports... So if it does work with the CANUSB, i'd like to be a beta tester

We have not tested it with CANUSB, but it should work as eagle33199 commented.
I already sent the file to him, and he'll try it.

    Additional info for CANUSB users...
There is a Virtual COM port driver on Download page at CANUSB site.
It looks the CANUSB will be seen same as CAN232 using the driver.

I've sent the installer program to four persons.
Are there any other candidate of the beta tester?

Looking forward to seeing the beta test results.

Ken, i'll post some results here by the end of the week - i've been having trouble finding free time to just go cruising around with it :p

And then if there's any question/anything not working with it, i'd be happy to assist with the debug process (i've got a 12 hour car ride coming up in two weeks with a buddy, so i'll have plenty of time in the passenger seat :))

    Hi Ken,

I was wondering if you can help me out and translate this or at least take a look at this document. It has a reference to the GVIF video interface that we think the 2006+ models use. I can't tell if this is a video panel, video card, single board computer, etc. I've been looking through a translated version of the company's web page too, but I haven't found any other gvif references. If you have a couple of free moments please take a look and let us know what you find. Please, post your findings here or back in the GVIF thread I started.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    It works!

Here's a screenshot of the beta version of the PCM for English-language Windows:

Many thanks to ken1784 not only for making it available but for some hints on resetting my CAN232.

    Hi John,

Thank you for the screen shot.
Glad to see the PCM software works well on the English Windows.

For the first time users of CAN232, following is a basic CAN232 function testing through a terminal software.
The default CAN232 serial speed is 57600bps.
    http://www.can232.com/can232.pdf
    1. send "V" command. You'll see "V1220" version info received.
    2. send "N" command. You'll see "Nxxx" serial number.
    3. send "X1" command to enable AutoPoll function.
    4. send "S6" command to set 500 kbps CAN speed meeting the Prius speed.
    5. send "O" command to open the CAN port. You'll see a lot of CAN messages.
If above sequence works, the PCM should work.

    nice pix.

i see that the gas gauge goes to orange at 14% and red at 6%. does that correlate to the last two bars?

Not on my '04 it doesn't. My last bar starts flashing below 12%, not sure the exact cut offs above that. From the sounds of things they may have adjusted the range on the '06s.

It is related to the "guess gauge". :)
Anyway, I'll try to ask the author the coloring.

kinda wondering if the 06's gas gauge had been adjusted. my 04 did start flashing the last bar at around 12% according to CANVIEW. wondering if all the ragging about the "guess gauge" prompted them to do some re-programming.

kinda scary. definitely had thought of going 50-75 miles after the blink since i could easily do that on my 04. would be a bummer if the bar now blinks at 6%

Anyone find a source for the OBD-II cable to connect the CAN232? I was thinking of ordering the CAN232 but that only seems to provide the electrical interface so the OBD-II cable would be required to connect to the car?

Since the MFD gets the mileage info from CAN via the gateway ECU, the MPG info, whether that be injector timing or something at a more higher level, has to be in the CAN somewhere. Granted, the MFD isn't as 'instantaneous' as we all would like.

i dont find it unrealistic to think that Toyota has taken in consideration the amount of discussion over the gas gauge to make some adjustments to its operation.

guess we need to hear from one the people with the new CANVIEW version

Ditto on this question. I am interested in the CANUSB, but don't know where you would go for the OBDII-CAN232 connection. How are you guys connecting the CAN232 to the car?

I asked mrbigh about it and he gave me this location to look at. I don't think he would mind me passing it on. I think #7 is what we need.

    Hello all,

The primary purpose of the Prius CAN Monitor is the data logging capability.
There are some interesting data posted by 108@Nagoya to our local forum.
They are coolant temp graphs two kinds of front grill shutting and one heater use for his 30 km commuting.

    Enjoy,
    Ken@Japan

    C. Shut grill same as above(100%) with heater use(outside temp was 14-20 C) heater setting was 25 C
It never reach the stable 90- C level. The mileage numbers are...
    without heater: 35.72 km/L (84.0 mpg)
    with heater: 33.25 km/L (78.2 mpg)

I sent them email and they were kind enough to respond. Their prices are still reasonable though and they have one with loose connections at the end that could easily be adapted.

    Hello Glen,

We do not have a cable that will connect to the CAN232 device. The DB9 pin out on the CAN232 adapter does not match the pin out of our cables. You could buy cables from us and modify them to match the pin out of the CAN232 pin out. How many cables do you need?

    Sincerely,

    Paul Bowen

If you have a pin extractor, and the DB9's they use can have the pins extracted, you can reorient the pins appropriately.
