Quite the rant. If only everybody were wonderful and virtuous and fit, as you apparently must be.

You reputation for dismissiveness has been well established over many months... The sophistication of your methods continues to grow weaker and weaker.

    So true.

Go to paris - 95% of folks are fit.
Go to Golden Spoon - ( or whatever that all-you-can-eat place is in many of the Southern States) and 90% of the patrons have double chins & double belly flaps.
(EDIT: Golden Coral - i think)

I wasn't aware I had a reputation here. I'll have to check my profile for that indicator. I do recognize BS when I read it - don't confuse common sense with "dismissiveneness."

I was in Socal last week, and I saw plenty of chubby people. The problem is not unique to the southern US.

I can't speak to the greater population of the state, only the thousand-ish people I saw in person.

To me, the idea of a Corolla as a replacement in the lineup is ludicrous- nothing against the Corolla but it's a much bigger car. So it can only replace the c in the strictest technical sense that it is another hybrid Toyota. The 2020 Yaris is the real replacement in the market segment.

I think Toyota decided that it was a mistake to diversify within the Prius brand, and a better move to make the Prius HSD powerplant available to other Toyotas that didn't have Prius branding.

Beyond that, there's just not much interest. The automakers want to build larger, more profitable cars for a better bottom line. Americans want to buy bigger cars for... all sorts of reasons.

So from my point of view, Toyota has gone from having two subcompacts on the market (Yaris at the low end and Prius c at the high end) to just the one offering.

I sure don't have enough data to say whether they're leaving the subcompact market underserved, or if they are just pruning off one choice too many.

If the C were not available when you bought yours, what car would you have bought?

I couldn't edit previous post, here's the TLDR version:

If they discontinued the Prius Prime and introduced a Highlander PHEV, would you consider that to be a replacement?

That's 2020 - the WIKI article " Toyota Yaris - Wikipedia " talks about it.

Unless they brought the Corolla Hatch Hybrid to USA - it's not big inside - about PRIUS c size in many respects, but a nicer, more modern car, and similar price to "c".

It's interesting how markets vary. I would be interested in a Corolla hatchback, but hatchbacks are not widely imported to the US. On a recent trip to Ireland I rented a Skoda Octavia sedan with a hatchback. Lots of room for 4 people and luggage. Very big under the hatch. Nothing like that on offer in the US.

We were replacing a Hyundai Accent. We rejected the Fit, and wanted to test drive a Mazda 2. They had already been discontinued. We weren't willing to settle for the then-current Yaris hatch. We never intended to get a hybrid, but after the test drive we realized it was the best subcompact we had yet driven. It cost more and we are unlikely to earn it back given low fuel prices, but it's a nicer car.

So Mazda don't sell the "2" in USA any more? Here sales are pretty well line-ball between YARIS, 2 and ACCENT. The Mazda though is better specified with AEB etc which isn't available on YARIS. Though Mazda 3 sells 2½ times as many.

    Not even for a moment.

The primary goal was to get a car my wife was comfortable driving, and that meant a subcompact, 100" wheelbase.

Again, hybrid was just sort of the un-asked-for extra feature. That means the regular Prius would have been two degrees apart from our target, where the c is only one off.

If we could have waited for the 2020 Yaris Hatch we would have saved money and had a "righter" car but the wife's new extreme commute demanded earlier action.

Toyota is adapting accordingly, taking advantage of its flexible design by rolling out Corolla Hybrid and upgrading RAV4 hybrid. Work has begun on expanding PHV offerings too. We already see Corolla as a "Prime" model and caught a glimpse of a RAV4 mule appearing to be plug-in upgraded too. More mainstream choices getting the tech is exactly what we have hoped to happen.

'Friends, Skinflints, PriusChatters, lend me your time. I come to bury the C, not to praise him. The evil that Prius do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their batteries; So let it be with the C.'
    • GOOD - the short wheel base made the C into a fine urban commuter. Like my BMW i3-REx, the C could turn in short distances and fit in small parking places.
    • GOOD - the urban mileage and range was adequate and nimble enough to deal with the slow-motion parking lots of our urban streets.
    • BAD - it was not a pocket rocket . . . another pokie Prius.
Time moves on and the RAV-4 is probably the fondly remembered Prius V replacement. The Corolla merging with the Prius drivetrain simply brings to reality the 20 year comparisons of the Prius to the Corolla. Good that silliness will soon end.
