    Hopefully, these new downsized models (Prius C & Yaris Hybrid) will help bring over some of the great hacking talent, which is still stuck with the mods for 00 Insight over their forums.. :)

    That's a great idea! Perhaps asking for some preliminary non-intrusive CAN sniffing via basic Prius ODBII tools, wouldn't be over the top to add on that wish list?Thanks

    Actually, that Fiat 500 weights less (it's basically half the car), depends on motorization and options, say 960ish [kg], while Yaris Hybrid is around 1040kg and Prius c 1080kg. This is very agressive development (and strategic stance) by Toyota, just recall the craze of early-mid 2000s in the ICE land - the norm was gaining weight as there is no tomorrow across all segments.

    There are some lighter non-hybrids even sedans and 5dr hatchbacks in Europe/S. America/N.Africa/ME/Asia, something from Renault-Nissan comes to mind, but that would be hardly considered a car in the NA..

    I have read on another post, on another thread - very likely, from Ken@Japan that the Prius C operation voltage at MG1/MG2 is only up to 500V (or 520, I don't remember).
    The Prius C also does not have a PWR mode button.
    The Lexus CT200h "boost voltage to 650V" when in Sport mode (read, "PWR mode" in fancy Lexus jargon).
    If 2+2=4, then I would say that in the Prius 3rd Gen, the PWR mode does not only change the mapping of the gas pedal, but also enables the 650V somewhat sooner than when you stomp on the gas pedal in ECO mode (otherwise the 0-60mph/100kmh would not be the same in the 2 modes). What I mean is that PWR mode enables 650V much sooner (always?) for a shorter pedal pressure, that actually enables the "mapping". And likely in normal mode 650V is allowed only at specific pedal positions.

    Or said differently, ECO Mode triggers 650V on the MG2 only after a certain pedal pressure is applied (somewhere all the way down).

    I have always thought that the reaction at little pedal pressure in PWR mode is too abrupt compared to ECO mode/Normal Mode. My impression has always been that something more was happening changing the behaviour of the drive train, which was just more than mapping differently the gas pedal.
    It might be that I am hallucinating ( ;) ), but it seems that the engine sounds differently when revving up in PWR mode compared to other modes.

    This is what I tried to explain, but not successfully, in my post "HSI bar analysis".

    This has also implications for the Prius C, meaning that less expensive materials/components can be used since the max voltage is 30% lower than on the Prius 3rd Gen.

    sport means more responsive, power should mean, well powerful but with 134 ponies, lexus decided it couldn't claim power:) The aqua/prius c with less than 100 is either in power all the time or normal depending on your pov.


    Your probably reading too much into this. They chopped off 8 of the 28 battery modules which drops it to 144V. They also took a little less than proportional off the motor to 45kw from 60kw. This shaves weight and cost, but I doubt they skimped on quality. Drop a higher power lithium battery in and an appropriate inverter, and I bet the motor will also be able to jump up in power and voltage:) Maybe TRD will do a special:cool:

    A Japanese Prius friend has Denso DST-2 scanner (compatible to Toyota's official TaSCAN), and he reports he observes max 650V on ICE starting, heavy acceleration and heavy regeneration on Gen3 normal mode.

    I believe Gen3 Prius uses same power between normal and PWR mode on full acceleration.

    But what about normal operation in Normal vs. PWR mode? Still 650V? (is that what you mean by ICE starting? Because what I took from that is only when the engine is warming up)

    Please define what is "normal operation".
    He observes between 202V and 650V on normal driving including heavy acceleration and heavy regeneration.
    ICE starting means the MG1 drives ICE by 650V voltage on every ICE starting period whether ICE is hot or cold.

    Hi Ken,

    Could you ask you friend to verify whether it is 650V every time? The Gen 3 Techstream log file I got from Paja only show sometimes it is 650V, other times it may be 500V, 379V, 600V or 321V regardless of ECO Mode or not.

    From the SAE paper, 2004-01-0064 (Gen 2), the boost voltage is dependent on choosing the minimum voltage that doesn't need flux-weakening control.

    Oh sorry. I meant not heavy acceleration or heavy regenerative braking that you mentioned above. If you were just driving around town or cruising, is it still 650V in Normal Mode?

    You mention 202 to 650V so I guess the "up to a maximum of 650V" applies in Normal mode for the Prius. There's no 500V limit.

    But if that's the case, how does Toyota/Lexus define "up to 500V" for the CT200h? Does that mean that even under heavy acceleration in a CT200h, it will only produce 500V (unless you're in Sport mode)??
