Prius C $4627.25 repair estimate

    The 12V battery is about $200, the traction (HV) battery is $2k and up.

    A Prius has 3 batteries
    The Hybrid battery is $2300 to $3000, often lasts the life of the car.
    The 12 volt accessory battery, like any car's 12 volt battery, time over 4 years is a bonus. $150 to $200
    One or more Fob batteries, about every 2 years you should spend $3

    He's talking about the small 12V battery, not the large high voltage battery.

    Glad to read that this all turned out as well as it did. But I must say that from the original post, what struck me is the mention of "Trickle charge the 12V using the jump point under hood."

    I thought they didn't add that under hood jump point until the 2013 model year. I have a 2012 Prius C Four and I don't have that under hood jump point.

    Or do I?

    I haven't been able to find it in my 2012 Prius C. When I gave someone a jump start I ended up pulling off the battery cover under the rear seat and jumping from the battery directly.

    I thought that jumping someone with a hybrid is an extreme no-no?

    It is easy to do multiple thousands of dollars of damage to the Prius. I do not even recommend jumping a Prius from another car more than once. If the battery is dead, replace it.

    Some of the early c's didn't have the under hood jump hood? If it was a frequent need you could maybe wire up something.

    I hadn't heard that, so I just went ahead and did with with no ill effects. The 12V battery in the Prius is pretty tiny, so you want to have the car "running" (with the "Ready" light showing in the driver display) so that the high voltage battery can also be providing 12V power. Seemed to work fine for me.

    YIKES. Exactly the WRONG advise to give. :eek:

    This makes it much more likely to smoke electrical components in the Prius.
    If you MUST try this, the Prius should be OFF. The little battery might not be enough to do the job.
    The solution to that is to find a different source for the jump; it is NOT to start the source car and get it running.

    That advice applies equally regardless of what the source vehicle is; it should NOT be running when the jump is done.

    Ignorance is bliss, I guess. My first impulse was not to do it, but it was a young lady alone at an Interstate rest stop at 5AM in the morning and just didn't feel like I should leave her there alone - so I did what I thought would work and I got away with it.

    I guess next time I'll plead "not capable".

    It is also a phone charger and a flashlight, as well as starting small cars. There are larger ones if you need to start medium gas engines or small diesels.

    The C manual does recommend having the charging vehicle running (p478).

    Two things about that:
    Everybody makes mistakes and this is one.
    This is referring to jumping a dead C from another vehicle......and not the other way around.

    The potential problem with NOT having the donor vehicle running is that you end up with BOTH batteries dead.
    That is a minor potential problem compared to burning up the electrical system on the donor vehicle.

    But you can prevent that with a little common sense, like not cranking the dead vehicle too long and not attempting to use a tiny little vehicle to start a big monster.

    I'm living this exact situation. I was quoted $2744Cdn for a master cylinder. $3868 installed. I opted for the $200 salvage yard part. Itll still cost $802 for labour and diagnostics. I pick it up today hoping for the best. I'm going back to a gas only car asap. Ive also had to replace a $2000 steering rack at 111000kms. These costs and the constant worry of life crippling repair costs have outstripped my fuel savings since owning this car. For me, it isnt worth the worry of "what super expensive part will go next without symptoms or warning". Sad too because i really enjoyed the car and how cheap on fuel it is and the smaller eco foot print it has. I just cant live in fear of the next $4000 repair bill.

    There's nothing "hybrid" about the brake master cylinder or steering rack.

    OTOH, with regular cars at least you're not paying the hybrid premium, if you decide to let go of it, move on.

    You aren't gonna like to hear this but..................

    The parts you listed would have cost you about the same on ANY car these days, or almost so.
    Neither of them are a unique design in a hybrid. Those parts might, in fact, be shared with another Toyota line or two.......like a Camry for instance.

    And given all the posts here, your experience is NOT typical for any Prius model.

    Can that ACDelco ACDB24R be used in a 2012 Prius C2? I've heard that some minor bending is needed on the hold-down strap, but the vent tube and terminals are a good fit.
    I ask, because I get the DOES NOT FIT Your Car message on Amazon and Ebay for the ACDelco ACDB24R, but I think some people have tweaked the hold-down, reversed some connector hardware around and everything fits fine.
