If that is how the car knows, then that is an avenue of attack for unhappy drivers.

There is a slight problem in that you don't know what they think unless you collect and hand over the data, and once you do there is no appeal if their algorithms flag you as a risk.

I remember Thomas from Autogefuehl mentioned in one of his videos he was talking to one of the Toyota technical guys about it. They said they may implement a hot key on the entertainment screen to toggle the warnings off. He mentioned that some Mercedes already have that function, so it may come as an OTA update possibly...?

I currently get a warning if I go 6 mph above the speed limit, but mine is not a simple bong, it's a voice that says e.g. "The speed limit is 30mph". This is configurable and can be turned off, but I find it useful, especially going somewhere unknown.

Of course they would mention something like this - its not like any commitment given.

I would not get my hopes high though. I dont have any expectation that Toyota will introduce TSS OTAs with functional changes. If ever bugfixes or even take away of functionality in worst case (like Tesla).

How many cars use the same software next to the few Prius in EU anyway? The new CHR comes to mind so far.

But who knows - perhaps there will be positive surprises... Japan changed alot in the last years and perhaps Toyota too?

I can confirm at the least France and Italy have it.

In the manual, or the car? It's in the Finnish manual, sure, not in the Finnish car.

(The EU manuals seem to mainly just be translations of the same manual, afaict - they don't actually indicate per-country info).

I can see somebody making a CANbus device that turns off the alarm with a single button press. Or, if it's sourced from certain countries with questionable ethics, I bet it could be done automatically on startup. Just need to find what the command is.

We did this probably 6 years ago with Progressive insurance I think it was. It was optional to get a discount. We plugged something into the OBD-II port. They told you up front what they tracked, and they gave weekly updates on what events it found, partly so you could improve your driving. It included hard braking, hard acceleration, hard turns, and speeding above a certain number (it didn't know what road you were on, so at that time it didn't know what the local limit was).

There are 3rd party apps that collect and sell that data also - our insurance rates were increased after we starting using Life 360. We looked into it and apparently he EULA states they can sell the data to insurance companies. We immediately deleted the app after we got a letter from the insurance saying they'd gotten data from a 3rd party that we were driving twice as many miles every year than we'd told them on our older car.

The Toyota app is tracking that info also - although Toyo states they don't sell it one never knows for sure what's happening behind the curtain.

Sorry for pushing the thread further away from the OP - this topic could have quite a long thread by itself...

I'd be interested to see those reports, if you can give a link.

He seems to be talking about the speed limiter/DRCC margin setting - that's disjoint from the RSA warning setting. I have that, set to +5 if I recall. It's the RSA warning setting that's missing.

There might be something there though - if the speed limiter is enabled, it stops warning about road signs as long as you're under your set speed limit? Which you can freely change? Never tried the speed limiter...

    Good question.
This is the first topic i will face when i get the car.
Because in Italy the speed limit signs are an inconsistent nightmare and the systems get confused at every corner. Not because i'm used to drive faster than the limits.

Had a fiddle with the speed limiter - couldn't see that it affected the road sign alert behaviour at all. So not really sure what the post above is describing.

I've just wrote a reply in the forum trying to understand what he meant. Even the writing was a bit unclear.

This thread is fascinating to me. I hadn’t realized the EU passed such regulations. As an American, I generally am jealous of the EU’s more stringent regulations regarding things (e.g., there are a lot of additives which can be used in food in the US that are banned in Europe).

However, this particular one would drive me bonkers. I don’t drive crazy fast over the speed limit, but typically am over the speed limit.

That said, I don’t see such a regulation gaining traction in the US.

I suspect most people in the EU aren't aware either. This is only appearing in new cars now. It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

I've been wondering why this thread hadn't disappeared yet, since it's a non-issue with US cars, but I finally clicked on it, and now I see. I think we could use a thread on the driver monitoring and reporting capabilities of these cars. I turned off the driver video monitor almost immediately because of general irritation with it (can't even look to the left and right while coming to a stop at an intersection, for example). Intrusive technology that doesn't help, imo. But it does get us used to "big brother" always watching us, doesn't it?

Then there's the lane keeping/assistance tech. For the most part, that's been useful, and I appreciate it, especially when rolling down the highways with the radar cruise engaged. I don't even mind having to signal every lane change, so as to "let the car know" I'm intentionally leaving the lane it's tracking. (I ordinarily wouldn't bother if there was no other car within sight, for example.) But I suppose it's a good habit, more or less, to develop. But I really draw the line at this machine keeping tabs on my driving style, and then potentially reporting on me back to various "authorities," or, worse, the insurance industry. If this is a capability, Occam's razor says it will eventually be employed. In the interests of "public safety." But, of course, really in the interests of the corporate bottom lines, and, who knows, perhaps negging a "social credit score."

Not to say the crazies out there don't need to be reined in, but I see the potential for abuse and further diminishment of whatever personal liberties we retain to be high. And to return to the original topic, for goodness sake, does anyone really NOT drive at least 5-9 above most posted limits?? It's an irritant to have the nanny nag by turning the speed sign red for going over. It's an arbitrary limit anyway, and I'd prefer to be able to set it where I want it. How about 10 mph above? There are times when I'd like to know I'm in the range of getting a ticket (my police friends have all said that if you set your cruise a 9 above, you'll almost never get pulled over.). Just some thoughts. (And, by the way, my 22 Prime had a speed governor that came in somewhere around 100. Anyone found the limits of the new Prime yet? I drove a 1000-mile plus highway route last week, had a couple of short bursts in 90s, but never got near a limiter. A bit timid to find out - not many places to safely test. I'm guessing it is somewhere north of 110, since the tire are H-rated now. :))

((Any of our EU friends put theirs on the Autobahn yet??))
