Prius 2010 Oil Change Interval Revised? Not yet... (closed)

If the rotation is front-to-back and back-to-front, The tires starting in the front and rotated every 5,000 miles would have completed 3 of the 5,000-mile stretches in the front (15,000 total miles) at the time you reach 25,000 miles. The back tires would have the other 10,000 miles in front.

In the other scenario of moving to 10,000 after the initial 5,000-mile change, the tires first in front would have completed on 5,000-mile stint and one 10,000-mile stint in front at the time you've reached 25,000 miles. The back tires would have the other 10,000 miles in front.

In this rotation scenario, then there would be no effective difference.

 

Screw it. Confirmation or not, 10,000 mile intervals sound good to me.

I'd just like to clarify, in some of my posts in this thread and in response to this news, I said things like, I hope this isn't just a "evil" rumor,...it was just in zealous enthusiasm about the news and in hopes of further confirmation. I would like to thank Sphyrna and just make it clear that I did not mean to project that I thought anyone was doing anything but trying to bring new information to light.

Whatever the reality becomes once we get confirmation from Toyota, I think Sphyrna was 100% genuine in a desire to bring real news about The Prius and other Toyota products to this forum. Should get kudos for bringing it to light.

 

I agree... I have two GEN II's with 90+K and never had I had to add a drop.

I would assume it was low to start with "from a mistake" or there is a problem.... the latter is safest to assume.

At least with my 2004 Prius, a 12 month or 10,000 mile interval worked out just fine. The lab report claimed the oil was good for more, plenty of reserve TBN, no unusual metals, no fuel residuals, etc

If the alignment is out of whack, or the tires are pure crap (Um, like the Integrity), a rotation every 10,000 miles is plenty. How about in the EU, with high speed autoroute driving?

Think they're rotating tires every 5,000 miles, when the usual service interval is at a minimum every 12 months or 10,000 miles? Or how about the cars with 24 month or 30,000 mile service intervals?

I agree. Even going 12 months or 10,000 miles with Mobil 1 0W-20, the oil level in my 2004 Prius never went down by more than 2mm on the stick

Yes, best to assume there is a problem. I had a 2000 GMC Sierra with the wonderful Vortec 5.3 V8. That thing burned so much oil, that oil changes were redundant. But the Prius isn't a GM product, oil burning is NOT normal with a brand new Toyota

I bumped mine up too on my GenII to 5000K, then to 7000K.. the oil was still good.

Looks like jayman went 10K, not sure if he was using synthetic or normal Oil.. I was using normal oil and while it was black, it was not dirty black, you could still see through it pretty easy when a thin thread was flowing out the drain hole.

I'm impressed with how clean these engines run.
I've always had American made cars before and fought with losing oil... My jeep Cherokee doesn't use oil, but it leaks transmission fluid.. but thats another subject.

 

Sorry I'm new to to this forum but I'm confused about how you refer to your distances...what is 7000K...7000 is seven thousand yes? is the K for Km?...7000Km would be about 4500miles ...if the K means thousand then 7000K would be a verrrry long oil change interval.

 

Ok.. Ok.. I made a mistake..... just beat me and get it over..:deadhorse:

7K is 7000 miles.... 7000K is 7 miiiiillliiooon miles... I change my oil before I hit that!

 

It's the same because it accomplishes the same thing which is rotating so that there is never more than 5000 miles difference in the amount of miles the tires spend on each axle.

If you rotate your tires at 5000 miles, when you reach 10,000 miles each tire has spent 5000 miles on each axle. There is no point in rotating at that time so you wait until 15,000 miles when there is again a 5000 mile difference. At 20,000 miles all are again equal so no sense rotating until 25,000. You accomplish the objective of evening out wear and save a few dollars in the process.

 

Again, not to be disagreeable with the one store in So Fla ... this notice has NOT been distributed nationwide. That Service Mgr is simply mistaken and making assumptions.

As the largest store within 200 miles we'd be aware of it. Again today I asked and NOTHING has been sent to dealers nationwide.

As of now it only applies to the clients of one store in So Fla. - until others receive official notice from Toyota. Proceed with caution at your own risk.

 

It is official! If other stores don't know is just because they don't know, not because it is not official.
The entire Southeast Toyota network has been notified officially!

Unless it was the Extended Performance Mobil 1, I would never consider it. And, even then, I would prefer to change the oil - every 5,000 miles.

 

So, if I have a 2007 Prius, how often should I change my oil? 6 mos/5K? And should I use all synthetic?
